I wanted to convert one of these vPars to 11.31 but the install failed with the message 'Wrong vPar version"
To resolve this issue (I hope) I want to upgrade the A4.0.6 to A4.0.7 on all the 11.23 partitions then retry the 11.31 install.
I have two questions:
1). I assume that I can update each machine individually the when all done (after several weeks) I can reboot the whole nPar thus cycling the MON to the new release.
2). Has anyone installed 11.31 on an nPar running an 11.23 MON? Can this be done or am I spinning my wheels...

Re: Upgrade vPar software within an nPar
1) Yes you will need to update each system, each requiring a reboot. I would start with the system running vpmon.
2) No. upgrade-ux works well within an OS, say taking the September 2007 OE to the September 2010 OE. It is much less reliable taking a 11.23 system to 11.31. I'd recommend building a new system on new hardware and migrate by moving the SAN disks most of your apps and data are already sitting on.

Without reading the manual now, I'm sure - really sure - the vpmon needs to be A5.xx version.
The documentation has a large chapter about upgrading and mixed scenarios - I would update the first vPar in nPar mode (11.23 to 11.31 including vPars), then (once in in vPars mode again) you can update the 11.23 versions from A4.6 to A4.7 - but AFAIR there are no changes between these versions.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

SolutionIf I recall correctly -- your "monarch" vpar (or the vPar you usually launch vpmon from) needs to be HP-UX 11.31 and running vPars 5.x -- which could be your 11.31 vPar if you wish OR an isolated, disk path of the nPar not belonging to any vPar that is a minimmal HP-UX 11.31 install with vPars 5.x installed.

Re: Upgrade vPar software within an nPar
You can run 11.31/11.23 in mixed mode under vPars A5.x (11.31)....but not A4.x (11.23)
