IVM 4.2 Issues at installation

Hi,
I've installed a couple of VMs succefully, but after tunning base_pagesize to 64 Im getting random errors while installing a new HP-UX VM

Im currently using HP-UX 11.31 Update 7 both for vmhost and vmguest
And the kernel is tuned with this params (Some changed by the install and other changed based on the doc "System Sizing Guidelines for Integrity Virtual Machines Deployment)

vmhost1#kctune -S
Tunable Value Expression Changes
base_pagesize 4 4
filecache_max 326511288 1% Imm (auto disabled)
filecache_min 326511288 1% Imm (auto disabled)
max_thread_proc 1200 1200 Immed
maxdsiz_64bit 34359738368 34359738368 Immed

Re: IVM 4.2 Issues at installation

Maybe you have iSCSI based backing stores?
If so, note that you need AVIO drivers 11.31.1009.1 or later.

Re: IVM 4.2 Issues at installation

Bonjour,

"I recreated the iso images several times"

Well, I am afraid that the problem has noting to do with virtualization. How did you created the iso images files ?

You should check at the sw level the integrity of the depot :

swverify -x enforce_dependencies=false \* @ /tmp/ign_configure/SD_CDROM

Re: IVM 4.2 Issues at installation

Hello Stan,

Yes Im using iSCSI. At the VM host I have the following versions of avio

vmhost1#swlist -l product |grep -i avio
AVIO-GVSD B.11.31.1009 HPVM Guest AVIO Storage Software
AVIO-HSSN B.11.31.1009 HPVM Host AVIO LAN Software
AVIO-HVSD B.11.31.1009.01 HPVM Host AVIO Storage Software
AVIO-IGSSN B.11.31.1009 HPVM Guest AVIO LAN Software

Should I upgrade it?

Re: IVM 4.2 Issues at installation

Hugo,

On a HP-UX Hosts 11.31, March 2010, with AVIO drivers downloaded in August 2010, I installed a VM on an raw iSCSI device with no problem.

Version of AVIO were :

# Initializing...
# Contacting target "scu001"...
#
# Target: scu001:/depotHP/SW_AVIO_11iv3_1008
#

#
# Bundle(s):
#

GuestAVIOStor B.11.31.1009.01 HPVM Guest AVIO Storage Software
GuestAvioLan B.11.31.1009 HPVM Guest AVIO LAN Software
HostAVIOStor B.11.31.1009.01 HPVM Host AVIO Storage Software
HostAvioLan B.11.31.1009 HPVM Host AVIO LAN Software

The main difference with you, is that I did the installation through Ignite and a SW depot of DCOE. I didn't work with iso image files.

So yes, of course you should upgrade, but in fact it is a general true law.

But I still think you should swverify all of your iso files. I had some troubles in the paste (not for HPVM purpose) with dumped dvd with a wrong block size (should be 2 KO ?)

Re: IVM 4.2 Issues at installation

AVIO-HVSD B.11.31.1009.01 is the one needed.
Hopefully it's properly installed. Did you
restart the host since?
Can you try installing the guest onto some
local disk if it makes difference?

Re: IVM 4.2 Issues at installation

I have other two VMs with avio that were installed succefully in this host with the same dvd images. The only difference that I see is that the vg00 disk is on iSCSI.

Re: IVM 4.2 Issues at installation

Looks that there might be an issue when installing a HP-UX 11.31 VM using avio on an iSCSI disk. Because I could install the server when I presented the virtual storage device lv as scsi not avio_stor

Solution

Re: IVM 4.2 Issues at installation

Are you using LV on iSCSI disks as backing stores or directly the iSCSI disk? Note that the first is not supported.
AVIO 1009.01 on top of raw iSCSI disk should work. If it doesn't the driver could be improperly installed. You might try updating the AVIO drivers to the latest version
(available at software.hp.com).

Re: IVM 4.2 Issues at installation

Stand, sorry for the delay I saw your response, I managed to install and have a stable enviroment assigning an iSCSI LV backing store, but without AVIO just using VIO.
Please where did you find the supported configurations? Could you share a link?
