Get AMP’d about modernizing your big data platform
As I speak to more and more clients who have invested in Hadoop-based platforms and integrated big data analytics into their enterprise architectures, I’ve recognized a shift is taking place. Organizations want to modernize and replace these platforms to meet the ever-increasing demands of the business. My colleague, Doug Cackett, writes about this shift in his industrialization blog series, explaining how organizations are looking to more tightly integrate data and analytic platforms closely to their application portfolios.
Pressures to move to the cloud, adopt containers/Kubernetes, and ensure the entire information estate conforms to the security requirements of the organization—are common themes that cross organizations of every size and industry. These modernization and migration efforts are being fast-tracked because Cloudera has marked end-of-life and end-of-support for the current Hadoop distros, forcing a migration to CDP/Ozone. Additionally, many organizations are demanding more value from their big data, which is also accelerating migration efforts. For most organizations, the modernization process is not a question of if, but rather, how to go about it in the next 12-18 months.
The most common questions I get are, “What does the end-state solution look like?” and “How do I go from what I have today to where our organization needs to be in the future?” As always, the answer to both questions is the same: it depends. For some organizations, removing their existing Hortonworks or Cloudera platforms is easy because they have only used those platforms as scale-out data lake storage. Whereas for other organizations, it’s a more complex problem because of significant investment in Hadoop-based tooling for data ingestion, management, processing, and interfacing to analytical tooling. In this case, there isn’t always a clear mapping between the applications and databases in those Hadoop-based “stacks” and what is available in the open source community.
HPE AMP Assessment Program
That’s why HPE is offering the HPE AMP Assessment Program. The goal is to help clients answer these difficult questions and de-risk the modernization of their information estate. With this offering, HPE will deeply Analyze your current-state platform, provide a detailed Map to modernize your current platform in a way that will meet the business needs of your organization, and finally, Prescribe a systematic plan to get you there. Depending on the complexity of your existing platform, HPE will perform this assessment in as little as one week. Experts in Hadoop-based platforms, hybrid cloud deployments, and Kubernetes orchestration will work with your architects and engineers during this assessment. HPE experts and your team will inspect your current-state platform from the underlying infrastructure to the workflows, applications, and data sources. The HPE team will then work offline to document findings and deliver an actionable approach to implement the future-state platform.
When the assessment is complete, you will have a few key assets that will illustrate not only what the future-state solution will look like, but how long it will take to get there and what it will cost. This clarity will allow you to make an informed decision on the best way to wind down your existing Cloudera or Hortonworks environment. It will also show you how simple it is to adopt open source technologies and modern deployment mechanisms using Kubernetes across any environment--be it on-premises, in the public cloud, or at the edge. As part of the AMP assessment you will receive:
- High-level architectural advice, performance planning, and recommendations
- Feature mapping to address the issues with the current-state and areas to improve across multiple use cases
- Operational best practices and recommendations
- Application services and storage layout for the future-state solution
HPE will also provide a detailed implementation plan that includes:
- Step-by-step approach going from the current-state to the future-state
- On-premises, cloud, and edge deployment scenarios
- Overall project timeline and dependencies
- Scope and level-of-effort to complete the migration
HPE will help you make a well-informed decision
These assets will provide you with a complete picture of the solution and a path to realize it so that you can make a well-informed decision on how to proceed.
And if you don’t want to take my word for it, I’ll be happy to connect you with organizations that have gone through the same approach. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get AMP’d and begin your journey to a modern and business outcomes-centric data and analytics platform!
