Announcing HPE XP8 Gen 2 storage: Delivering uncompromising performance and resiliency
The HPE XP8 Gen2 takes the revolutionary design of HPE XP8 to the next level of performance – without compromising the integrity of one of the industry’s most reliable storage platforms. The scale-out architecture is significantly faster, while providing the same 100% data availability, resiliency, and flexibility as in the previous generation.
Resiliency, speed, intelligence, and agility for enterprise applications at scale
Given the vast amounts of data generated every second, it is easy to understand how harnessing and leveraging that data can seem like a daunting task for organizations on the road to digital transformation.
To effectively manage your data, you need rapid access, and the extreme availability to easily search, store and analyze your information. Reliability, simplicity and ease-of management across the lifecycle become of paramount importance as you begin to evaluate current and future needs for your infrastructure.
This becomes especially pertinent in mission critical environments that require the insights, intelligence and automation that come with resilient, fast and reliable storage. And that is where we have some very good news to share about the fastest storage array in the industry.
100% data availability. Guaranteed.
The new HPE XP8 Gen 2 is built on the trusted architecture of its predecessor, the HPE XP8. The 8 year– and counting – track record of 100% data availability, spans the entire system’s installed base and continues to deliver uncompromised resiliency.
Lightning speed and efficiency
In the development of the next generation HPE XP8, we focused on making the storage system even faster to meet the increasing demands of your most critical workloads.
The HPE XP8 Gen2 can deliver 33M1 IOPS, an improvement of 50% over the HPE XP8. Additionally, the cache IO latency has been significantly reduced to <40ms, almost half of the 70ms in the current XP8 generation.
While these are impressive top line numbers, what is even more dramatic is the day-to-day operational performance. This new array generation achieves with a random mix workload of 65/35 – improvements that double the IOs per second.
So – how is the new XP8 Gen 2 able to achieve such remarkable gains?
Our engineering teams have done amazing work in optimizing the microcode of the array, and introduced a new hardware-based compression accelerator. This compression accelerator offloads the compression of data moving into the storage drives, freeing up the storage controller microprocessor to handle more IOs. The new compression accelerator is not only about speed and offloading the microprocessor, but it also improves the compression efficiency by 20%, allowing more data to be stored on the same amount of physical capacity in the array. That basically gives you 20% extra storage – at no additional cost.
Protecting your investment dollars
The new HPE XP8 Gen 2 provides unmatched value at a very competitive price point.
To simplify the move to the new HPE XP8 Gen 2, as well as to protect your investment in mission critical storage, HPE will be offering a data-in-place upgrade from HPE XP8 to HPE XP8 Gen 2.2 This upgrade will allow you to keep all of your existing storage media, as well as all of your data in place, while you replace the controllers of the array.
This upgrade is performed online, with full data availability, so that applications can continue to run simultaneously. No data needs to be migrated or moved, making this a simple process, and allowing you to take full advantage of the next generation storage enhancements with a minimum investment.
We will carry this ability forward into future generations to ensure that your investment in HPE XP Storage is protected.3
Agility for all of your workload requirements
The HPE XP8 Gen 2 continues to provide the flexibility to optimize configurations for any workload. It provides support for the most appropriate media type for extreme workload requirements, with up to 69PB of internal storage capacity, and an additional 255PB of external storage. HDD, FMD, SSD, NVMe, and SCM drives are all supported with the ability to concurrently deploy NVMe and SAS in a single HPE XP8 Gen 2 array. HPE XP8 Gen 2 also fully supports end-to-end NVMe connections with FC-NVMe connectivity to hosts.
The capability to connect NonStop and mainframe systems to the storage array is another key differentiator for the HPE XP8 storage system, ensuring that you can connect any workloads to the enterprise mission-critical storage platform.
Built-in intelligence
Built-in intelligence features of the HPE XP8 Gen 2 include HPE Performance Advisor virtual machine analytics, continuous-track remote data analytics, and predictive drive sparing. The HPE XP8 Gen 2 software package also includes the Intelligent Storage Manager and Data Protection Manager applications that provide everything needed for comprehensive storage management, data protection, and data reduction capabilities.
Flexible consumption model
The HPE XP Storage platform provides a modular, scalable, and resilient storage architecture that delivers greater performance, ease of use, and flexible consumption models either as a traditional purchase or through the HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform for today’s most demanding enterprise application environments.
The HPE GreenLake platform combines the simplicity and agility of the cloud with the governance, compliance, and visibility that comes with hybrid IT.
HPE GreenLake offers a range of cloud services that accelerate innovation, including cloud services for bare metal, compute, container management, data protection, and storage. And HPE XP Storage is available through HPE GreenLake for customers who want to consume their storage as a service.
And of course, quality is always built in
Reliability and quality are among HPE’s core values that continue to drive the development of our new products and services. The HPE XP8 Gen 2 carries on the legacy of HPE XP storage systems as the prime example of continuous refinement and improvements, designed to deliver the best user experience for our customers.
The HPE XP8 Gen 2 will be available in November 2021.
