Backup and recovery for Amazon EBS Volumes and EC2 instances just got easier
Secure your enterprise workloads: Backup and recovery for Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) Volumes and Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2) instances just got easier
Introducing the enhanced HPE Backup and Recovery Service to backup and recover Amazon EBS Volumes and EC2 Instances. Delivered through HPE GreenLake, this service helps to backup and recover Amazon EBS Volumes and EC2 instances across multiple accounts against threats in a simple and cost-efficient approach.
By Ashwin Shetty, worldwide product marketing manager, HPE Storage
As the value and business criticality of data increases, so do the challenges of backup, recovery, and data management. These challenges are exacerbated by exploding data growth, increasing SLA requirements, and an evolving threat and compliance landscape.
If your IT organization is like so many, you’ve been accumulating data protection solutions over the years – and now you find you’re saddled with rigid, siloed infrastructure based on an equally rigid backup approach. This leaves you in constant maintenance mode with disparate, multi-vendor backup and recovery systems that are complex and expensive to maintain. Multiple touch points of administration slow down production, and the costs of software licensing, disruptive upgrades, and capacity over-provisioning can add up fast.
Data protection across envirnoments comes with its own challenges
Protecting and managing apps and data across the core data center, private cloud, and public cloud can prove increasingly complex and costly. As your organization leverages cloud to grow your business, you start generating volumes of production data that must be efficiently protected as it scales. And you’re suddenly faced with:
- Growing cyberthreats. Ever-increasing ransomware attacks affect every industry. With data distributed across multiple locations on-premises and in the cloud, IT leaders urgently require a solution to effectively protect their data against ransomware and malware threats.
- Siloed data increases cost and risk while lowering efficiency. With the proliferation of data infrastructure, data is increasingly likely to be siloed by location, owner, data type, management platform, and more. This level of complexity severely inhibits mining data to power innovation and deliver business value – even as it increases IT expense, risk of attack, and potential for data loss. Therefore, IT leaders need platforms to unify data and eliminate siloed infrastructure.
- Inconsistent protection policies. Data protection across on-prem and cloud tends to be inconsistently enforced and complex to manage with no common protection policies resulting in increased risk for your data
There is an effective solution. Introduced last year as a part of HPE GreenLake for data protection, HPE Backup and Recovery Service is backup as a service designed for hybrid cloud. This service simplifies how you protect your VMware virtual machines (VMs) running on any storage across hybrid cloud, bringing with it the cloud experience and flexibility of software delivered as a service.
What's new: Cloud native backups for your Amazon EBS Volumes and EC2 instances
We have made significant innovations to HPE Backup and Recovery Service, and today we are happy to announce that you will be able to protect your Amazon EBS Volumes and EC2 Instances with the cloud-native HPE service.
The enhanced HPE Backup and Recovery Service experience enables customers to consistently backup and recover data across on-premises or in the cloud with global protection policy, eliminates data silos, and is delivered on a secure platform with built-in protection from ransomware.
Simple and consistent data protection with global protection policy
The enhanced HPE Backup and Recovery Service is a 100% true SaaS offering, no additional proxies, virtual appliances, media servers or software to deploy and manage. All operations are driven and managed by the service. It is a single service to backup and recover Amazon EBS Volumes and EC2 Instances – within minutes and in few simple steps.1 There are no additional scripts or code to develop, saving you time and resources.
This service is easily managed by a single cloud console for protecting VMware VMs and
Amazon EBS Volumes and EC2 Instances. Single policy-based orchestration and automation helps to form custom protection groups with flexible global protection policies that define backup schedule and retention.
HPE Backup and Recovery Service enables to vizualize multiple AWS accounts and easily allows you to administer backup and recovery for Amazon EBS Volumes and EC2 Instances from a single console. You’ll be able to quickly visualize through the dashboard and apply the appropriate protection policies.
Highly efficient and cost optimized
This service is built on proven HPE Catalyst technology which provides space efficient backups enabling HPE Backup and Recovery Service to deliver better storage efficiency as compared to alternate AWS backup solutions.2
HPE Backup and Recovery Service stores your data in a compressed, de-duplicated format in Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), which helps to drive down the cost of long-term retention of your data, as well as reduces backup storage costs. Storage efficiency benefits include:
- Reduced network bandwidth costs
- Backups finish faster as it sends only incremental changes for efficient data transfers
- Faster to restore as it restores only missing blocks from the cloud store for recovery
- Enables users to retain more with predictable costs and cloud scale.
HPE Backup and Recovery Service delivers up to 5x better storage efficiency (up to 80% space savings)2 relative to similar offerings from other vendors.
HPE Backup and Recovery Service provides a consumption-based pay-as-you-go experience while backing up your Amazon EBS Volumes and EC2 Instances . You don’t have to worry about complex software licensing or manage cloud infrastructure- everything is managed by the service. There are no additional charges for data egress, ingress, search operation charges. We enable you to shift from owning and maintaining your backup infrastructure to simply accessing and utilizing it.
Secure by design
HPE Backup and Recovery Service encrypts data in transit and at rest and stores your data in an immutable format within the service. Backup images are made inaccessible to ransomware ensuring data backup security. Backup data immutability prevents a backup being deleted or modified before the configured retention date.
An additional security feature of this service is Dual Authorization. With Dual Authorization set, a second approver with role ‘Administrator’ or ‘Backup and Recovery Administrator’ is required for deletion of a backup or snapshot. A user will not be able to unilaterally delete any recovery points without the second approver.
HPE Backup and Recovery Service stores backups of Amazon EBS Volumes and EC2 instances outside of the customer’s environment in an air-gap manner, which ensures that backups are immutable and cannot be deleted. This feature ensures hackers or bad actors cannot compromise the backup copies.
Comprehensive data management
This enhanced data protection service is delivered through the HPE GreenLake platform as a part of HPE GreenLake cloud services that transform the way you manage your apps and infrastructure. You can use cloud data services from HPE GreenLake to orchestrate compute, provision storage resources and protect workloads with a unified access and experience. This creates a single, company-wide data management approach to break down all data silos with agility and cloud operational experience to help customers eliminate complexity and move faster.
Don't miss this part: Try HPE Backup and Recovery Service for free
