GigaOm names HPE a Leader and Fast Mover in the increasingly critical STaaS market

The recently published GigaOm Sonar Report for Storage (STaaS) as a Service recognizes HPE as a “Leader” and “Fast Mover” among eight STaaS providers. Learn the reasons behind the recognition.

–By Tim Desai, Product Marketing Manager, HPE

HPE and GigaOm report-BLOG .pngStorage as a Service (STaaS) offers businesses across industries a key advantage. By enabling agile management of on-prem storage and workloads without the overhead costs of upfront capital (for storage hardware and software) and dedicated staff time, STaaS is a game-changer. Organizations simply subscribe to storage services and access and utilize a vendor’s infrastructure on demand, while avoiding more rigid purchasing options like leasing and renting. That’s why STaaS has become so crucial so quickly: it eliminates a number of perennial IT challenges, including system lifecycle management, complex support, the need to extend system lifespans, and reliance on domain experts.

Together, modern hardware and software and optimized analytics-driven storage management have enabled vendors to remove risk from the delivery of STaaS and reduce costs. As a result, adoption of STaaS-based solutions continues to intensify:

  • Total STaaS annual recurring revenue (ARR) exceeded $1.0 billion as of the end of 2022. (Source)
  • By 2025, 40% of newly procured premises-based compute and storage will be consumed as a service, up from less than 10% in 2021. (Source).
  • By 2028, consumption-based storage as a service (STaaS) will replace over 35% of enterprise storage capital expenditures (capex), up from less than 10% in 2023.  (Source)
  • The global STaaS market will grow at a CAGR of 28.2% from 2023 to 2032. (Source)

HPE’s STaaS leadership wins recognition from GigaOm

HPE helped pioneer storage as a service. So we're thrilled to see that in its recent Sonar Report, analyst group GigaOm recognized HPE as a "Leader" and "Fast Mover" among eight STaaS providers. GigaOm Sonar is influential because the report provides a forward-looking analysis of vendor solutions in a nascent orGigaOm.png emerging technology sector. It assesses each vendor on architectural approach (Innovation) while determining where each solution sits in terms of accelerating time to value (Feature Play) versus delivering a complex and robust solution (Platform Play).

The report highlighted HPE’s particular strengths:

  • HPE is rated exceptional, with outstanding focus and execution across ease of use, control plane and management layer, data plane and protocol support, multi-tenancy, and ecosystems and integrations.
  • As a Platform Play, HPE provides “a unified experience across a range of storage and data services.”
  • “The HPE GreenLake approach unifies operations under a single cloud-like model that many enterprises will find appealing, particularly those looking for a cloud-like experience on-site that aligns with that in the public cloud.”
  • “The customer experience remains at the center of the solution, which is now available in a wide range of geographical locations and to organizations of practically all sizes directly through HPE or via its partners.”

STaaS is critical because it helps drive transformation

Let’s step back for a moment and assess why this matters for IT today. In an era of tight competition and ongoing economic challenges, today’s IT leaders must maximize the potential of infrastructure solutions while doing more with less. In this context, STaaS is key to modernizing and optimizing on-prem storage. Based on a foundation of data and analytics, powerful and simple management, and a choice of management services, the best STaaS solutions offer compelling ROI based on:

  • Reduction of up-front capital costs by transitioning to an OPEX  model
  • Increased cloud-model agility on-premises, backed by SLAs or other guarantees
  • Avoidance of over-provisioning by predictably purchasing only needed capacity
  • Easy and seamless scale
  • AI-based insights for operational efficiency
  • Offloading management and maintenance to the STaaS provider, so your IT personnel can pursue more strategic tasks

Storage vendors and IT leaders agree that STaaS should resemble the experience of public cloud services as much as possible. But across the competitive landscape, offerings still vary widely — and many do not fully deliver on STaaS’ potential. Choosing the right vendor means careful consideration of multiple variables, such as initial commitments, cost transparency, expansion, ease of use and administration, protocol support, multitenancy, ecosystems, and integrations, and more. It can be a daunting task.

HPE GreenLake for Storage: STaaS with an intuitive cloud experience

At HPE, we’re committed to simplifying operations and moving faster with a cloud experience everywhere. Our hybrid cloud strategy empowers you with a common control plane no matter where your infrastructure is deployed. We deliver a growing portfolio of cloud-native solutions that bolsters our position as the leading enterprise-class STaaS provider.

Many STaaS offerings involve compromises — such as premium pricing for customized managed services, less than ideal uptime and availability, and/or complex and inefficient management. Ours does not. With HPE GreenLake for Block Storage delivered through the HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform, we provide the industry’s first storage as a service offering self-service, along with a built-in 100% data availability guarantee for mission-critical environments. Our unique value is based on the following — and makes HPE the easy choice.

  • The HPE GreenLake Data Services Cloud Console offers self-service agility so even line of business and database admins can self-provision storage instantly without the need for domain expertise. IT teams can use a singular control plane with a consistent cloud experience that eliminates the inefficiency of disjointed, domain-specific data infrastructure management tools spread across disparate silos.
  • Our HPE GreenLake for Block Storage service enables organizations to transform in place to a self-service cloud operational experience while maintaining the control, security, performance, cost at scale, and mission-critical reliability provided by on-prem solutions.
  • The HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform enables organizations to modernize data management when and where they need it — all in just a few clicks. We provide the largest array of storage services in a single platform, with a comprehensive suite of on-demand hybrid cloud data services spanning block, file, disaggregated HCI, storage fabric management, backup and recovery, and disaster recovery — all delivered with a unified cloud operating experience.
  • Our STaaS offering includes guaranteed 100% data availability for mission-critical applications. For all other workloads, we deliver industry-leading six 9’s of availability, while competing STaaS offerings cannot exceed four 9’s.
  • HPE’s cloud operational experience is powered by data-driven insights and intelligence. HPE InfoSight, the industry’s most advanced AI for infrastructure, enables you to predict and prevent disruptions before they occur. AI-driven recommendations also ease management and drive efficiency based on predictive support automation.
