HPE Cloud Volumes Backup: Plug-and-play data protection for the enterprise

With the successful integration of HPE Cloud Volumes Backup stores via the data protection software, enterprises are  ready to utilize this secure, offsite cloud data protection. HPE Cloud Volumes Backup is plug-and-play, without the need to replace existing data protection or backup workflows.

HPE-Cloud-Volume-Back-up_data-protection_blog.pngEnterprises have been forging ahead with utilizing cloud-based storage as part of their backup strategy.  Whether they are enhancing their backup infrastructure or looking to protect against ransomware, HPE Cloud Volumes Backup can easily integrate into existing infrastructures to meet these needs.  HPE Cloud Volumes Backup is an enterprise cloud backup service that can integrate with HPE Catalyst HPE to protect HPE storage (including Nimble, Nimble Storage dHCI, 3PAR, Primera, and SimpliVity) using HPE Recovery Manager Central (RMC), and both HPE and non-HPE storage using leading backup applications from Veeam, Veritas, Commvault, MicroFocus and others.

For the purposes of this blog, I will be focusing on ISV (Commvault, Veeam) integration.

The Cloud Volumes portal

Simple and intuitive, administrators will control HPE Cloud Volumes Backup through the HPE Cloud Volumes portal.  Administrators can manage all services, incuding block and backup, billing, and user management from this interface. From the backup stores view, administrators access a guided wizard (Figure 1) to create backup stores. Simplicity is key here, as administrators will only need to give the store a name, a description, and choose a region or location for availability. The service dynamically allocates capacity when consumed by the backup, so administrators will not need to specify a size.

HPE Cloud Volumes secures each backup storeโ€™s access with individual username/password pairs.

HPE Catalyst Protocol

Our HPE Cloud Volumes Backup implementation uses HPE Catalyst protocol (Figure 2) for efficiency, performance, and security. Data is deduplicated and compressed before transmission, reducing the amount of data sent across the network to the HPE Cloud Volumes Backup store by up to 95%[1] and preserving useable backup store capacity, resulting in lower TCO compared to alternate cloud-based backup solutions.

The HPE Catalyst protocol is also adept at protecting enterprise backup data from looming threats such as ransomware and malware, by isolating stores from OS commands and encrypting data at rest and in flight.  This provides a secure, offsite, backup target that is invisible to ransomware. Data is encrypted in flight and at rest when residing in HPE Cloud Volumes Backup

HPE Cloud Volumes Secure Client

To utilize HPE Cloud Volumes Backup with HPE Catalyst, administrators will need to deploy the HPE Cloud Volumes Secure Client.  The secure client is a simple plugin to enterprise backup infrastructure (Figure 3.) which provides a secure tunnel to encrypt enterprise data in transit to HPE Cloud Volumes Backup stores. (Note: HPE Recovery Manager Central (RMC) has already integrated the secure client.)

Figure 3. HPE Cloud Volumes Secure Client - ArchitectureFigure 3. HPE Cloud Volumes Secure Client - ArchitectureCurrently, HPE Cloud Volumes Backup enables backup using RMC for HPE Storage, or leading backup applications from Veeam, Commvault, Veritas, MicoFocus and others for  both HPE and non-HPE storage. In the future, HPE Cloud Volumes Backup will support other HPE Catalyst enabled data protection software.

Adding an HPE Cloud Volumes Backup store to Commvault & Veeam

Enterprises must configure HPE Cloud Volumes Backup stores within data protection infrastructures before existing or new workflows can use them. They can add Commvault libraries (Figure 4) and Veeam repositories (Figure 5) from within their respective consoles.  The process will be familiar for anyone who has deployed a HPE StoreOnce System. Typically, the only attributes needed to add a backup store are a friendly name to describe the store, the IP address of the HPE Cloud Volumes Secure Client, and the credentials for the backup store.  Any other attributes will be dependent on site specific information.

Backup and Restore

After successful integration of HPE Cloud Volumes Backup stores with the data protection software, enterprises are now ready to utilize this secure, offsite and cloud data protection.  Furthermore, HPE Cloud Volumes Backup is plug and play, without replacing any of the existing data protection or backup workflows. Restoring from HPE Cloud Volumes Backup works just like restoring from any other source.
