GREENLAKE BACKUP RECOVERY OG 1078252562.pngDiscover a new storage path for hyperconverged infrastructure: backup and recovery with HPE GreenLake

Backup is no longer regarded as a separate IT operation. Instead, it is considered as a part of the overall infrastructure and data management strategy. Thus, backup operations are incorporated into cloud infrastructure and data management platforms together with their own policy engines to ensure consistent governance and management. These platforms provide consolidated operations for backups across the enterprise, whether core, cloud, or edge. They also provide a common user experience across operating environments that is cloud-like in its operation.

Now HPE GreenLake Backup and Recovery extends support for HPE SimpliVity

A key product in our hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) portfolio, HPE SimpliVity delivers an efficient all-in-one solution for edge-to-core workloads. In the market for more than a decade, HPE SimpliVity is a proven solution in VDI, edge, ROBO, and main data centers.

Though HPE SimpliVity provides its own built-in backup offering across HPE SimpliVity clusters โ€“ and with external storage using HPE StoreOnce to HPE Cloud Bank Storage, thereโ€™s always been a demand to protect virtual machines (VMs) on HPE SimpliVity directly to cloud, driven in part by compliance requirements and then need for reduced CapEx and OpEx.  That demand is now being met as HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery now supports HPE SimpliVity. Itโ€™s the ideal solution for backup to cloud and when the HPE SimpliVity environment does not have a remote HPE SimpliVity site.

Key benefits of HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery

Effortless protection to meet your SLAs

The HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery console makes it easy to manage backup and recovery operations from anywhere. This cloud native console is designed for simplicity of operation. You donโ€™t need to be a backup and recovery expert or require training to set up and use the service.

HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery is launched from the Data Services Cloud Console tile inside GreenLake Cloud Platform, as shown here.

This service also integrates the HPE StoreOnce Catalyst technology, providing up to 8 times better storage efficiency than competitive backup solutions. HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery stores the data copy in a compressed, and deduplicated format to help reduce the cost of backup storage capacity and drive down the cost of backup data retention. The service is designed to deliver optimal secondary storage efficiency.

Ease of use

This illustrates the ease of using HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery and how simple it is to configure Protection Groups and global Protection Policies to automate protection of the on-premises VMs.

Secure by design

Cyberattacks are the greatest risks to data integrity and resilience, and they are major concerns of both business and technical leaders. Backup operational effectiveness is the baseline for cyber recovery, but organizations must look holistically at the problem and architect a solution that incorporates integrated cybersecurity with data protection

HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery encrypts data in transit and at rest with the option of storing backup data in an immutable format. Backup copies are made inaccessible to ransomware to help ensure data backup security. Backup data immutability is key to prevent a backup from being deleted or tampered. Reserving the backup copies is important for any organization's risk (such as ransomware) mitigation strategy.  Apart from offering immutability on the data protected, the scheduling allows automated protection policy that says โ€œset and forget."

With HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery, additional security features such as dual authorization set, a second approver with the role "Administrator" or "Backup and Recovery Administrator" is required for deletion of a backup or snapshot. Dual authorization is intended to prevent both ransomware attackers and potential internal threats from unilaterally interfering with the backups.

On-premises components (VMware protection only)

HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery provides two on-premises components running as VMs: Data Orchestrator (DO) and Protection Store Gateway (PSG). These components are entirely managed by the cloud service, and they can be recovered using guided recovery should they be corrupted or deleted. To further secure HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery, only the on-premises Data Orchestrator establishes a connection to the DSCC in the cloud. The Protection Store Gateway never connects to the DSCC, and for cloud protection, it only sends data over an encrypted link to the HPE Cloud Protection Store. The DO and PSG run a hardened Linuxยฎ OS that reduces the attack surface for malware.

HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery components (on-premises) with Data Orchestrator

Data Orchestrator manages service operations defined in the cloud. It establishes a mutual Transport Layer Security (mTLS) tunnel to the DSCC Backup and Recovery component in the cloud. This secure tunnel remains active to send northbound management-event data, logs, and southbound management requests. The on-premises network proxy or firewall must permit outbound connections only.

Protection Store Gateway through the On-Premises Protection Store

Protection Store Gateway processes backup data before it is sent to the On-Premises Protection Store and/or HPE Cloud Protection Store. It hosts a service-defined On-Premises Protection Store that are accommodated from VMFS datastore provisioned from any available storage array. Communication between the Protection Store Gateway and the console is going through the secure Data Orchestrator. The Protection Store Gateway uses the HPE Catalyst engine to de-duplicate, compress, and encrypt backup data before it is sent to the On-Premises Protection Store and the Cloud Protection Store. For security, the Protection Store Gateway is deployed on a hardened Linux virtual machine. Multiple Protection Store Gateways can be deployed to increase scale and performance. The Protection Store Gateway deployment is flexible to accommodate different sized On-Premises Protection Stores and performance requirements. Sizing guidance is provided.

Best practices to take into consideration

  • You should not have HPE SimpliVity backup policy and HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery policies with overlapping backup schedule.
  • Recommendation is to use HPE GreenLake Backup and Recovery if File level Recovery is needed as it supports both Windows and Linux Operating Systems.
