Migrating from Cisco HyperFlex to the private cloud era (and how HPE can help)
Just learned you have to move from Cisco HyperFlex to another hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) vendor? Discover how HPE can help with HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Business Edition.
– By Matt Haron, Technical Marketing Engineer, HPE
The hopes and dreams of all Cisco HyperFlex users have been crushed as Cisco has decided to end of life HyperFlex. This comes after Cisco decided to partner with Nutanix for Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI). While this is not the only choice out there, it is one that Cisco has strongly encouraged for their HyperFlex users. Is this the right choice? Is it the only choice? Let me answer that!
More choice
At HPE, we like to give people the choice of selecting the best solution for their workload and use case. When it comes to hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), our customers are enjoying the benefits of a private cloud experience.
The good news is that HPE has multiple options for creating their private cloud – including HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Business Edition. This cloud-based software allows you to manage your HPE Alletra dHCI or HPE SimpliVity environment easily and in a single console. This means that managing multi-sites or multiple systems has the same experience as managing a single site or system. Additionally, you can provision workloads in the public cloud or integrate directly with HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery to have seamless protection across your virtual environment.
I could go into detail about the integrated backups on HPE SimpliVity, as well as the inline deduplication and compression that uses your space efficiently. And I could also talk about how you can grow compute and storage independently with dHCI, have 6 9’s of availability, and save money on VMWare and other licensing based on scale, but I won’t.
Why not? Because you’re focus going to be migrating your data to these solutions – not all the speeds and feeds. Instead, I’ll guide you what can be an involved process.
Migrating virtual workloads to HPE
Let’s be real here: Migrating these workloads can be a headache. To make this a tad bit easier, I have put together this table with some options that HPE gives you.
These are not the only three options – but these options are easy and reliable. Using vMotion to migrate is almost as old as ESX itself and restoring from a backup solution is straight forward. That's why I feel I don't need to walk you through how these work.
I do however want to expand on the Zerto migration piece. Zerto makes it simple to migrate any virtual workload from any virtual platform. This means that if you have Microsoft Hyper-V and want to go to VMWare vSphere, you can. If you have VMWare and want to migrate some workloads to another VMware environment and others like Amazon AWS, then you can. Zerto also sells migration packs, so you can purchase only what you need for the duration of your migration. Most people fall in love with it and purchase more. (Be careful as that might happen to you.)
Zerto even goes one step further and provides everything you need to prepare, design, and perform the migration. Check out this document: The Workload Migration Checklist. While this sounds simple, it creates a checklist for all the steps and processes involved in migrating workloads. This increased the simplicity making the migration super easy and reliable.
The final point I would like to make about Zerto is the application grouping. Applications generally require multiple virtual machines (VMs) to work. One VM could be the front end of the application, another could host the database, another could host endpoints, and yet another could have other app services needed. So when you migrate an application, it isn’t as simple as right click, move. Sometimes you need to plan this out and migrate groups of VMs not just a single VM. This is where the concept of application groups makes sense. With Zerto, you create an application group of VMs. These VMs can synch together and be controlled together. When you’re ready to flip the switch and migrate the workload. You flip the switch on the group and all VMs will be hosted on your new platform simultaneously. Now you don’t have to worry about having disparate infrastructure running your critical applications.
Be ready for the private cloud revoution
Whatever you decide, moving to HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Business Edition makes sense. HPE gives you platform choice when it comes to running your core, edge, or cloud workloads – and Zerto makes it easy to move those workloads to your choice. Now you know why it can be a smart move for your organization to join the private cloud revolution and migrate your Cisco HyperFlex workloads to HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Business Edition.
