We recently announced HPE RMC 6.2, a storage integrated data protection, copy data management and data mobility software solution for HPE Primera, HPE 3PAR and HPE Nimble Storage arrays that helps minimize secondary data sprawl across secondary use cases. This month I am pleased to announce that RMC 6.2 is on general availability. 

The new release of HPE Recovery Manager Central (RMC) consolidates secondary data management functions into a single, end to end integrated offering, delivering flash speed application protection, test & dev, analytics, reporting and data mobility that is built for cloud with less cost and complexity.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s new in RMC 6.2 as well as the key features, benefits and value that RMC 6.2 can deliver HPE Primera, HPE 3PAR and HPE Nimble Storage customers.

What’s new in RMC 6.2?

• Support for HPE Primera: We recently announced that HPE Primera - the world’s most intelligent storage for mission-critical applications – is shipping worldwide. HPE Primera redefines mission critical storage by delivering superior simplicity, availability and performance. HPE RMC 6.2 software is included as standard with HPE Primera and delivers a centralized data protection copy data management and data mobility software solution that helps minimize secondary data sprawl across secondary use cases such as:

     -Multi-tier data protection across primary, secondary and cloud tiers

     -Space-efficient Test & Dev

     -Analytics and reporting from clones without affecting primary workloads

     -Cross-array data mobility

RMC 6.2 for HPE Primera consolidates of all these secondary data management functions into a single, end to end integrated offering, delivering flash speed application protection, copy data management, and data mobility that is built for cloud with less cost and complexity. • Broader application aware data protection for HPE Nimble Storage: RMC 6.2 reduces cost and complexity for HPE Nimble Storage customers by enabling application integrated protection for VMware®, Microsoft® SQL, Microsoft Exchange, Oracle, SAP HANA®, and any Microsoft VSS-enabled application running as a virtual machine on HPE Nimble Storage. VM, Oracle, SAP HANA, Exchange ,and SQL database admins can now manage application consistent snapshots, backup, and recovery as well as Test & Dev - seamlessly and directly from within their preferred native interfaces. RMC’s centralized policy engine enables the automation of copy data management and data protection, aligned with SLA requirements and business objectives. HPE RMC software is included as standard with HPE Nimble primary storage. 
• Broader ecosystem support: RMC 6.2 also includes support for VMware HTML5-based vSphere client plugin, upgrades from RMC 5.0.x, 6.0.0, and 6.1.0 to 6.2.0., plus support for SAP HANA databases spanning multiple HPE 3PAR systems and SAP HANA databases on VMFS.

What are the key benefits of HPE RMC 6.2?

• Multi-tiered data protection: HPE RMC 6.2 has set a new bar for multi-tiered 3-2-1 data protection with its unique ability to orchestrate copies of data seamlessly across multiple HPE Storage systems and fully utilizing on-premises secondary storage and cloud tiers to provide a more holistic and cost-effective solution. This covers the complete continuum of data protection with high availability, replication, snapshots, backup and archive, enabling customer to comply with 3-2-1 data protection rule (three copies of data stored on two different types of media and with one copy off site).

• Flash speed with minimal app impact: RMC lets you predictably deliver on your backup and recovery SLAs with a data movement architecture optimised for ultimate efficiency (including tight data source integration, direct data paths and intelligent source side deduplication). Direct backup from your HPE Primera, HPE 3PAR and HPE Nimble array to HPE StoreOnce with HPE RMC bypasses traditional server backup techniques, delivering 23 times faster backup and 15 times faster recovery for your enterprise apps - with less cost and complexity and minimal impact on your production environment. 
• Eliminates cost and complexity of traditional backup: RMC reduces cost and complexity by streamlining and simplifying your backup architecture by eliminating extraneous infrastructure. It requires fewer server, storage, and network resources and reduces the number of systems you need to purchase and maintain for data protection. And as we’ve seen HPE RMC is included for free with any HPE Primera, HPE 3PAR, or HPE Nimble array.
• Simple cloud backup for long term retention, archive, and DR: RMC 6.2 seamlessly cloud-enables your apps and natively integrates your cloud of your choice. It optimizes your cloud investment, copying only unique data to the cloud for 20X lower cloud storage cost. And it enables secure cloud backup and DR - with encrypted, self-describing backup data.
• Simplifying data mobility between HPE 3PAR, HPE Primera, and HPE Nimble Storage: RMC 6.2 also includes a new Peer Copy feature which enables asynchronous periodic bi-directional replication between two or more homogeneous or heterogeneous storage systems. Peer Copy supports data replication across HPE Primera, HPE 3PAR and HPE Nimble Storage systems, eliminating the need to use host specific or hypervisor specific tools or expensive network-based appliances. Peer Copy allows for one-to-many, many-to-one, and multihop topologies, managed from within the RMC GUI.
