HPE Alletra 4000 techical-blog-HPE_data_satin_01_800_0_72_RGB.pngHPE recently announced the HPE Alletra 4110 and HPE Alletra 4120 data storage servers. Here Iโ€™m going to provide you with an overview of the technical capabilities of these new data storage servers.

Snapshot of the HPE Alletra 4110 and 4120 data storage servers โ€“ unique and shared features

The HPE Alletra 4110 data storage server is an all-NVMe product in a 1U platform designed to run your most demanding data-driven workloads. It has 20 direct-connect NVMe drives, 4th Gen Intelยฎ Xeonยฎ scalable processors, DDR5 memory, and PCIe Gen5 bandwidth.  The HPE Alletra 4120 data storage server offers a flexible configuration in a 2U platform supporting workloads from deep archives to active analytics data lakes to object software-defined storage. The HPE Alletra 4120 can be configured with a mix of HDD and NVMe SSD to meet your storage capacity and performance needs.

While each of these storage servers is designed and built for unique workloads, they share similarities.

The HPE Alletra 4110 and 4120 data storage servers includes the option of the HPE GreenLake as-a-service edge-to-cloud platform, enabling you to shift from owning and maintaining the servers to simply utilizing them. HPE Alletra 4110HPE Alletra 4110

HPE GreenLake for Compute Ops Management, a default option, delivers a centralized console for self-service and automated monitoring and operations, including health status and firmware management across your entire HPE Alletra 4000 fleet.

Each of the storage servers is designed with DDR5 memory along with 4th generation Intel Xeon scalable processors supporting 4800 MT/s, yielding a 50% increase in bandwidth over 3rd generation processors and DDR4.

The Ultra Path Interconnects or UPIs that support data transfers between processors have increased in number from three to four interconnects to deliver a total aggregate bandwidth of 16 GT/s. UPIs allow applications running on one processor to access data that is stored in memory associated with the other processor. For non-NUMA applications, this increased access nearly doubles the access rate of the previous generation of processors and memory.

The optional dedicated HPE NS204i-u Gen11 boot device is available on the Alletra 4110 and Alletra 4120 data storage servers, providing high-performance boot devices without affecting the overall storage capacity of either storage server.

The Alletra 4120 data storage server is highly configurable and can be populated with LFF HDD, LFF HDD+EDSFF NVMe, HPE Alletra 4120HPE Alletra 4120LFF HDD+SFF SSD, SFF HDD, SFF SSD+EDSFF NVMe, or SFF HDD+SFF SSD. EDSFF is the Enterprise and Data Center Standard Form Factor.

Both the Alletra 4110 and 4120 data storage servers utilize the E3.S family of form factors designed to update and replace the traditional 2.5-inch form factor in servers and storage systems.โ€ฏEDSFF drives provide twice the storage density of traditional SFF NVMe devices and with the direct attach PCIe Gen5 connections, twice the bandwidth.

In order to meet today's higher data processing requirements, each of the data storage servers support adding optional full-height half-length GPUs or custom FPGAs to the configuration.

Designed with security in mind

Zero trust is an approach to identity and access management that assumes no user or software is trusted by default, and it is quickly becoming the default method for securing assets. From silicon to software and factory to cloud, the HPE Alletra 4000 data storage servers are designed with zero trust security at their uncompromising core. This zero trust policy protects data from increasingly sophisticated and dangerous threats.

Whatโ€™s more, each of the HPE Alletra 4000 data storage servers comes with a physical bezel lock, logical Configuration Lock, Secure Boot, FIPS 140-2 Smart Encryption, and Self-Encrypting Drives.  Additionally, they include Secure Erase, which meets NIST Guidelines for Media Sanitization, so your data is protected throughout your entire infrastructure lifecycle, including end-of-life decommissioning.

HPE Integrated Lights Out 6 (iLO 6) extends the hardware root of trust from protecting server firmware to protecting select storage and network controller firmware. Support for the DMTF Security Protection Data Model provides certificate-based controller authentication.

NVMe storage configurations

With todayโ€™s 15TB NVMe drives, the HPE Alletra 4110 supports an all-NVMe capacity of 300TB. The direct-attach configuration of the drives allows for high-bandwidth, low-latency access to the data. The storage server is designed using DDR5 memory and 4thgeneration Intel Xeon scalable processors and supports 3TB of DIMMs. The Alletra 4110 data storage server can move data across internal memory channels to the processor at 4800MT/s, making it ideally suited for data processing-intensive workloads. The Alletra 4110 data storage server can optionally be configured with 2 full-height, half-length PCIe NICs and 2 OCP 3.0 NICs, providing up to 200Gb/s access to the server.

The larger storage capacity and ability to build hybrid HDD/NVMe storage configurations make the HPE Alletra 4120 data storage server ideally suited for data lakes, software-defined storage applications, and cache-intensive workloads. With todayโ€™s 15 TB SSD devices, the HPE Alletra 4120 data storage server can be configured with 810 TB all flash-based storage. Alternatively, filling the front drive cages with 20TB LFF HDD and the rear cage with twelve 15TB EDSFF NVMe drives creates a hybrid configuration with 480TB of HDD and 180TB of NVMe that is ideal for cache-intensive operations.

To sum up: Providing more compute power, bandwidth, configuration options, and greater capacity than before, the Alletra 4000 data storage servers are the next step in storage server technology.
