AC97 Drivers for Pavillion 6730

I have a Pavillion 6730 that I had to reformat with WIN 98SE, I do not have the recovery CD (I am doing this for a friend) and the WIN 98SE cd does not have the drivers. The HP set does not seem to have them available for download either. I am pulling what little I have left of my hair out! Can anyone help?

Follow this link, you'll see AC97 under Audio. It's listed for Win9x thru WinXP, I've used it on Win2000. You should be all set.

Jim,

Thanks! I did try that one already and it still does not work. Perhaps I intalled the driver wrong?

Re: AC97 Drivers for Pavillion 6730

Is he using the onboard sound or has he installed another sound card (ie: soundblaster)? Make sure if he's using a 3rd party card that you identify it and track down it's drivers.

I'm out of town right now so I don't have all my resources with me but I know a search on Yahoo (or any) for Windows 98 AC97 will come back with a bunch of hits. Maybe an older version of the driver will work for you? I know that link I sent was for a fairly recent version. This link has an older version of it:
http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/companies/496.htm

What steps are you taking for the install? Is the device showing as "Unknown" in the Device Manager? (Control Panel > System > Hardware)

If you can't resolve this this week I'll look into more when I get home this weekend.

Re: AC97 Drivers for Pavillion 6730

Sorry, just saw that last reply:

Here are the product specs for that machine:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?reg=&lc=en&cc=&prodId=hppavilion20888&docName=bph05747&cat=prodinfo

It lists it as an AMC97 rather than the AC97, don't know if there are any major differences.

I found an HP link for it, but it lists AC97:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareDownloadIndex.jhtml?lc=en&softitem=pv300en&sw_lang=en

Here is a link for the 6830 which carries the same audio:
http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/drivers/86/86995.htm

I can't find much on an AMC97 search.

Re: AC97 Drivers for Pavillion 6730

OK, now I am really going crazy! I uninstall the sound card (through: Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager) and when I reboot Windows automatically pulls the drivers for Crystal WDM Codec and requires files that are located on the "disk WHQL" which I don't have! For example it requires files like: PW4026.cat, which when browsing i cannot find. I am a novice with enough knowledge to make me helpful and a danger at the smae time! Perhaps I am doing something wrong? If you want, please e-mail some steps to help resolve this: rsieger@comcast.net. Thank you so much for your help.
