Excel 97

I know this is probably not the right forum but does anyone know the answer to this problem:

Everytime the User opens any Excel spreadsheet they cannot perform basic functions such as insert a row or cut and paste. The error message is the same everytime which is shown in the bitmap attached.

Go into Tools, Protection, and unprotect the workbook.

Does this happen on new spreadsheets or just on old ones? On all old ones or just a few?

Have you done a virus scan recently?

Does the following work in 97? This is from Excel 2K:

"Automatically repair Office or an Office program
This procedure detects and repairs problems associated with installed Microsoft Office programs, such as registry settings and missing installation files. It will not repair personal files such as spreadsheets or templates.

On the Help menu, click Detect and Repair.
To restore program shortcuts to the Windows Start menu, make sure the Restore my shortcuts while repairing check box is selected.

Note If the Detect and Repair command does not fix the problem, you may need to repair or reinstall Office."

PS Jon, Did you look at his error message? It doesn't sound like a protection deal at all to me.

Well.... that's wierd. I tested this prior to responding, and was able to duplicate the exact error. Now... I can't reproduce it!

So looks like protection isn't causing it.

Any merged cell in the sheet?
Or maybe it's the worksheet that protected.
As Ron suggested did you check the messages?
Maybe if it's not big a file and no secret info(do deleted the numbers,saves space), put it on the forum.
We/I can open it and browse around.

Merged and/or hidden column/rows can affect the copy process.

Ever tried to copy a (selected) single cell into a merged cell, it does give a warning.

But MS also has 'forums', newsgroups for office products:
