Import Filter for Microsoft Works

I recently reformatted my cousin's Pavilion 7920 that was running Windows ME with MS Works because it was infested with virus. I installed XP Pro on it, the MS Office 2000. Everything is working great, (even better after I updated the BIOS and keyboard drivers) but now I have a small problems with all the MS Works wordprocessing documents I restored from her backups.
I dont know which version of Works came with the 7920: 2000, 4, 5, 6, 7 ? !!!! It seems to be important because I tried to install a few text import filters for Works in MSWord, but when I open Works documents, I get a lot of little squares, and the text garbled in there. Ideas, anyone?

Re: Import Filter for Microsoft Works

Jacques: I would advise using the microsoft convereters from Works, downloadable from Bill's little site...

e.g.
Works 6.0 Converter for Works and Word Users

The Works 6.0 Converter allows you to convert word processor documents created in Microsoft Works 6.0 to Microsoft Word and other Works programs. Specifically, this converter works with Works 2000, 4.5, and 4.x, and Word 2002, 2000, and 97.

www.microsoft.com, downlaods then search on "Works".

I assume Eric's advice will fix your problem but if not: Make sure you have a default printer installed. Word gets really weird without one since it wants to show you what the doc will look like when printed and it can't do that without a default printer.
