NetBIOS over TCP/IP

Hi Everyone

A couple of months ago I posted the question "why can't I enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP over a dialup connection". There were a few replies (Jon F, XMAN) but basically I never got anywhere with the problem.

Recently the situation became an issue for me personally (up till then it was users only, when cares) but over the weekend it was get it working or drive 50 miles... so I started looking around. And lo! see microsoft kb article 282519 -- very short and to the point, it basically says you won't get it to work unless you have file and printer sharing linked ("bound" or "enabled on") to your networking connection.

And it works. Enabled it, dialled again, and browsed the network. Thanks everyone who posted replies, sorry I gave you zeroes, I won't do it again (came from a misunderstanding of the system).

Re: NetBIOS over TCP/IP

Chris,

Thanks for the follow-up. We typically have this TCP/IP setting disabled on our network.

It sounds like this could be a security hole for your network?

Better late than never, eh?

I don't see this as a security hole, as such -- I think that having a dial-up server in the first place is the major risk, not being able to browse the network once you have connected?
