outlook 2000 can't send with attachment

Hi,

We are using MS XP prof O/S and installed XP office. The problem is the Outlook 2002 does not work if the send mail with attachment. The error messages will be returned to sender likes "Relaying denied. IP name lookup failed" or "Relaying temporarily denied. Cannot resolve PTR record for 203.XXX.XXX.XXX". There do not have any problem if the send mail without any attachment.

The problem is not at isp or user accout as the same user who can send mail with attachment use W2K and outlook 2000.

I've surfed the net but still can't find the solution. Is it some security policy applied on OL2002. I also remove the Norton antivirus 2002 from the computer but the problem still remians there. Please advice.

What type of service are you connection to?

What type of attachment (exe, pdf, doc, vbs, etc)?

Have you installed SP1 for Office XP, and SP1 for XP Pro?

Re: outlook 2000 can't send with attachment

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your attention.

The file types are the normal one such doc, txt, ppt.

Strange, the problem is solved if I change the email format to "plain text" from "html". Do you konw what is the root reason that caused such problem of OL2002?

Re: outlook 2000 can't send with attachment

Hi,
Outlook 2002 seems that sometime works but sometime does not work. Even the email with attachment can be sent out by sender, but the receiver only got the email's content who did not receive the attachment.

What is the problem between Outlook 2002 and XP o/s?

Re: outlook 2000 can't send with attachment

I'm going to make an assumption based on your examples, tht you are using MSN and hotmail (http mail) as your ISP.

I've had "problems" lately sending mail to different addresses with my hotmail account. In some cases it was because of a relap agent between msn and my destination. Problem seemed to be caused to network congestion and dropped packets with to many retries.

After a certain number of relay attempts, the ISP refuses to re-send the message and you get the 550 error (trying to prevent infinite looping).

The 550 error cleared during the week, and during non-peak usage times.

I've also had "problems" with hotmail and attachments past a certain size.

Last, see if changing the extension to something the virus engines won't leap on or try to filter out, like "htm" or a non-standard "ddd" or no extension.

Re: outlook 2000 can't send with attachment

Hi,

So, the problem is not caused by the sender (such OL2002) but it might cause by network congestion or un-stability internet access. I've tried to ping the smtp server and found the respone time is either 500-630ms or no response (request time out). Is it this also will cause the problem for sending out email.

Thanks again for your help!

Re: outlook 2000 can't send with attachment

The poor response time can certainly be one symptom of problems on the network.
