Hi,
i think the long time could be for starting your services and for the pre-login antivirus scan.

Try disabling all unwanted services from

control panel | administrative tools | services

Re: PC Boot up slow

How much memory do you have? And, as already said, what services are you starting on bootup?
The unwanted services can be disabled on boot, but if you have less than 128MB RAM it will stay long time is bootup screen.

Re: PC Boot up slow

Adding to the above comments, try start/execute/msconfig, you'll have the list of services and programs launched.
Try unclicking and reboot if you think that it's not a problem of ram or antivirus...

Re: PC Boot up slow

David,

Most of longly booting-processes are lying with either too many programmes starting/running at the same time, or lack of memory (note that both diagnostics are very much dependent on each other).

This said, 128Mb are considered the strict minimum level of RAM for WIN XP proper, so I let you imagine what happens when other programmes are running at the same time. You may be wishing to augment the RAM as appropriate. That's my first guess.

Do you have SP1 for XP installed?
