restoring contacts for OUTLOOK

How do you restore the contact list in OUTLOOK. I have been able to restore users pst files off of back up tape and then importing the pst files back into the users accounts. This gets us the old mail but the USERS contact list is not there. Is there another file other than the pst file that needs to be restored?

Thank you for your advice

Re: restoring contacts for OUTLOOK

Hi Tony,

It depends on which address book the user was using. It sounds like they weren't using the pst file for their contacts. Have you searched around for any .oab or .pab files? Maybe they were using the Outlook Address Book or Personal Address Book. These files are probably going to be stored locally on the client but possibly on the server.

Re: restoring contacts for OUTLOOK

The "Contacts" list is stored as part of each user's mailbox on the Exchange server, so to restore that you'll need to do a restore at the Exchange server level, and hopefully you've got an Exchange-friendly backup program that can selectively restore portions of the mailbox without blowing away the current contents.

If you're talking about personal address book entries, then look at the profile setup for the location of the .pab file. These are stored on the local hard drive by default, so they may not be restorable, depending on your backup strategy.

Hope this helps.

Re: restoring contacts for OUTLOOK

Assuming you are not using IMAP or POP3. Some clients may be configured to work offline (in the event of network loss). The contacts can be stored in outlook.ost, the offline synchronization file.

Assuming the client is not set up to select between Online of Offline login, unplug the workstation from the network. Open Outlook. When the error message comes back that the server cannot be found click the work offline button.

If the client wasn't recently synchronized during the login where the contacts were lost, they may show up in this offline configuration. If they do, copy them to a directory on the hard drive. Close Outlook. Reconnect to the server. Synchronize the account, then copy them back from the hard drive into the contacts folder of Outlook.

You can just drag and drop the contacts both ways.

Re: restoring contacts for OUTLOOK

I am assuming you do not see Contacts under the folder list and when you go to new message you do not see Contacts.

TOOLS
SERVICES
Addressing Tab
Lower Window, click ADD and scroll to Contacts.

Close Outlook.
Open Outlook.

Under folder list you will see COntacts.
Right click Contacts
Properties
Outlook Adress Book tab
Check box that says: Show this folder an an e-mail Address Book.

Hope this helps.
