As I recall, your sound and modem are o the same card and I believe that riptide update changes the drivers for both. Try going to Device Manager and go into the sound Properties, select the driver tab and click on Roll Back Driver.

Why don't uninstalling the sound driver from the Device manager and then select the scan for hardware changes, which will reinstall the driver. winXp should have the driver.
