1/10GB-F VC Enet network issue

c7000 with BL860c and BL490c G6 blades, 2 VC 1/10GB-F modules.

connected wires from the 8 VC ports + 1 OA port to the HP LAN Switch
with 100Mbps connection. All the ports on the LAN switch are in the same
subnet.

Assigned the IP to OA, done EBIP for all the servers and interconnected
blades, then all the iLOs and interconnected SAN blades are coming into
the network, and it is going well.

Then installed the OS on one blade using vMedia, but the blade is not
coming into the network.

Then i played with VC, done the domain/network/server wizards, created
one network with 8 VC ports, created server profiles with the defined
network and assigned to blades. But still blade is coming into the network.

How to solve this issue ? What to look to debug this issue ?

Thanks.

Re: 1/10GB-F VC Enet network issue

Hi Shashi,
Looking at the VC Ethernet Network that you created:-

1. Does the Network Status report "OK" ??
2. Do the "External Uplink Ports" show as "Linked/Active" ??

I would reduce the number of ports assigned to your VC network down to one while you trouble shoot. (You can always add them back once things are working)

Choose one of your Server Profiles. Under "Ethernet Network Connections" you have your VC Network assigned to one or more ports:- Do these ports show the status as "OK ??

Referring to your OS installation: What do you mean by "...not coming into the network" ??

You didn't mention which OS you installed, but have you configured the network on the blade?? i.e. assigned interface IP to external network, NIC teaming etc. ??

Re: 1/10GB-F VC Enet network issue

The network status says "OK"

External Uplink Ports shows Linked/Active and Linked/Standby.

4 ports shows with Linked/Standby and 4 ports shows with Linked/Active.

Any server profile->Ethernet Network Connections (Physical ports)->status->OK

Not coming into the network mens, the blade is not pinging other servers and vice versa.

I have installed ESX in one blade and HP-UX in another blades, same result, they are not pinging other servers and other servers are not pinging these blades.

I have upgraded the VC firmware to 2.31, but no luck, same result.

Re: 1/10GB-F VC Enet network issue

One important question.

The 8 connections to the external switch(es);
Are they all from the same VC module, or are they 4 from each VC module ??

Re: 1/10GB-F VC Enet network issue

4 ports [(Ports 1-4 (10/100/1000BASE-T)] from each 1/10GB-F VC-Enet.

Total 2 1/10GB-F VC-Enets, so 8 ports

All 8 ports are connected to one HP Procurve LAN switch 2650 .

All the HP Procurve LAN switch ports are in the same subnet/vlan.

The OA port also connected to this switch.

The OA IP, iLO's of server blades, management IPs of interconnected blades are accessible in the network.

But the server blades are not coming into the network.

Re: 1/10GB-F VC Enet network issue

This might be the problem.

I'm pretty sure that you cant mix ports from two VC modules in the same VC Ethernet Network.

Try creating 2 VC Networks, putting the ports from each VC module into a separate networks.

Then on your blade, you should team NICs between ENet Module 1 & 2. Assign 1 of your VC networks to port 1 (of the teamed pair) and the othe VC network to the other port on the teamed pair.

Re: 1/10GB-F VC Enet network issue

Are you trying to etherchannel a group of 8 ports? You cannot create etherchannel groups of ports accross VC modules. That could be why half are standby. Create two etherchannel groups of 4 ports each.

On your VC network Do you have all NIC ports on all servers connected to all 4 uplinks on each VC? Best to separate as the other Brit says.

On your VC network setting do you have "Private" enabled? If so turn it off. Can you ping between blades now?

Re: 1/10GB-F VC Enet network issue

OK.

Now i have created two VC networks, each network contains 4 up-link ports from each VC bay.

Created a server profile, port 1 is pointing to VC network 1 and port 2 pointing to VC network 2.

mapped the server profile to a blade, and powered on the blade.

The blade is not coming into the network.

Now, please tell me, if i want to create a VC network with multiple up-link ports which are connected to a core switch where all the core switch ports are in a same VLAN, do i need to LCAP on the core switch ports ?

if you are creating ether channel uplink (either access port or trunk port) , you need LACP.

Re: 1/10GB-F VC Enet network issue

c7000 enclosure with 2 VC-Enet modules, each module with 4 up-link ports, so total 8 up-link ports, are connected one HP Procurve LAN Switch, all the LAN switch ports are in the same sub-net.

Created 2 networks, one network with 4 up-link ports from first VC-Enet module, and one network with 4 up-link ports from second VC-Enet module.

Created server profiles, all my blades are having 2 NICs, so one port is mapped to network_1 and another port mapped to network_2.

Powered on the blades, the blades are not coming into the network.

* In each network, all the ports shows "Linked/Active"
* LAG ID of all the ports are same (shows LAG ID as 27 for all the ports)

If i create 2 networks with only one up-link port from each VC-Enet module, then everything works fine, the blades are coming into the network

I have attached all the screen-shots.
