Bl460c G7 - POST Error: 1720-S.M.A.R.T. Hard Drive Detects Imminent Failure
Hi,
We found this for one of our BL460c G7 blades:
<EVENT
SEVERITY="Caution"
class="POST Message"
LAST_UPDATE="09/05/2011 06:18"
INITIAL_UPDATE="09/05/2011 06:18"
COUNT="1"
DESCRIPTION="POST Error: 1720-S.M.A.R.T. Hard Drive Detects Imminent Failure"
/>
</EVENT_LOG>
This is the only time it mentions a possible disk failure. The quiestion is: should we replace the disk, or just wait for some more S.M.A.R.T. warnings (like in the case for single bit errors, where a few number of errors can be ignored)? We have hardware-based mirroring for the system. If we can ignore the warning message this time, how can we reset the yellow LED for the disk?
Thank you for the help,
Viktor

If you shut the server down you might be able to clear the warning, or pull and reinsert the drive. I've seen them run for an amount of time and the drives didn't fail. But if you have a contract or spare drives I'd just get it replaced. It's cheap insurance in case it fails or corrupts the RAID set.

Re: Bl460c G7 - POST Error: 1720-S.M.A.R.T. Hard Drive Detects Imminent Failure
Thanks. What just bothers me is that we only have this one disk-related message in the event logs. Shouldn't I expect some more warnings from the S.M.A.R.T. subsystem?

Hi Viktor,
My Suggestion would be replace the disk as soon as possible.( Backup the data if needed).
