Cannot get NTP to work on new Procurve 5130 Switch
Hi,
I've been having an extremely difficult time trying to get NTP to work on the new Procurve 5130 Switch (5130-48G-PoE+-4SFP+ (370W) EI JG937A) using firmware JG937A-3109P07.
I set the DNS up.
dns server 8.8.8.8 dns server 8.8.4.4
I set the gateway up.
ip route-static 0.0.0.0 0 10.10.10.1
I can ping the ntp server.
ping pool.ntp.org Ping pool.ntp.org (206.108.0.132): 56 data bytes, press CTRL_C to break 56 bytes from 206.108.0.132: icmp_seq=0 ttl=56 time=5.926 ms 56 bytes from 206.108.0.132: icmp_seq=1 ttl=56 time=6.860 ms 56 bytes from 206.108.0.132: icmp_seq=2 ttl=56 time=5.382 ms 56 bytes from 206.108.0.132: icmp_seq=3 ttl=56 time=5.402 ms 56 bytes from 206.108.0.132: icmp_seq=4 ttl=56 time=5.381 ms --- Ping statistics for pool.ntp.org --- 5 packet(s) transmitted, 5 packet(s) received, 0.0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/std-dev = 5.381/5.790/6.860/0.574 ms
I setup my time server.
ntp-service unicast-server pool.ntp.org
The result is this:
disp ntp-service sessions source reference stra reach poll now offset delay disper ******************************************************************************** [5]206.108.0.131 INIT 16 0 64 - 0.0000 0.0000 0.0000 Notes: 1 source(master), 2 source(peer), 3 selected, 4 candidate, 5 configured. Total sessions: 1
disp ntp-service status Clock status: unsynchronized Clock stratum: 16 Reference clock ID: none Clock jitter: 0.000000 s Stability: 0.000 pps Clock precision: 2^-20 Root delay: 0.00000 ms Root dispersion: 785.44617 ms Reference time: 00000000.00000000 Thu, Feb 7 2036 6:28:16.000
What am I doing wrong? I even tried this, because that's the vlan with an vlan-interface ip:
ntp-service source Vlan-interface 10

Re: Cannot get NTP to work on new Procurve 5130 Switch
Did that do the trick for you? If not, there may be a firewall that is blocking Port 123.

David

Re: Cannot get NTP to work on new Procurve 5130 Switch
summa, sorry you had trouble getting ntp configured on your 5130 switch. i noticed you mentioned you couldn't find the ntp-service enable command in the comware manuals. you can find that information in the latest HP 5130 EI Switch Series Network Management and Monitoring Configuration Guide on page 14 (Enabling the NTP service). This guide can be found at http://h20566.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=7399420&docId=emr_na-c04771713&docLocale=en_US. hopefully, you'll be able to find other useful infomration that will help you with configuring your new 5130 switch in this manual and the others for this switch found at http://h20566.www2.hpe.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/psi/manualsResults/?sp4ts.oid=7399420.

Re: Cannot get NTP to work on new Procurve 5130 Switch
Yea it's all working great now.
I was looking at the HP - Comware - Cisco CLI reference document. Unfortunately, that one was for Comware 5 and I didn't know there would be changes in the commands between that and Comware 7.
I've since been looking at the H3C site and it's got all the information I need.
