HP Storageworks MSA 30 DB Storage to SGI Octane2

I want to get raid ready for my controller card ( not here yet)
I want to "x" the drives with the IRIX format. I have a new 68 pin to VHDCI cable.

the octane will not boot with the raid attached to the standard
scsi port on the back of the Octane, also only the 1 drive on the raid lights up, when I disconnect the raid from the octane2, the computer boots and the all the front lights on all the drives light up.
also so you should know that Im plugged into port A on the raids controller, port b is empty, Im running out of hair to pull out... and yes Im way over my head.
can anyone help me?

Hi,

Can you explain exactly what you mean by "the raid" and "x" the drives.

The MSA30 is just a SCSI disk shelf. It doesn't provide any RAID capability.

The Dual Bus (DB) version which you have, has two connectors. Port A connects to the 7 left hand drives, Port B connects to the 7 right hand drives.

When I say RAID, Im talking about theHP Storageworks MSA 30 and X'ing the drives, is just a wipe/stripe of the drives so IRIX/SGI can use them, the qlogic controller card, will provide the RAID capability.(if it ever shows up!) The scsi port on the SGI should be able to see the "desk shelf" to at least test the drives.

As said before, the MSA30 is just a disk shelf.

This means, connected to a "normal" SCSI controller you see each individual drive - no RAID functionality at all.

If your controller + OS combination can handle this - ok.

The MSA30 is normally used in combination with a smartarray RAID controller or as-is with hp-ux.


if *your* raid controller can handle such devices - I don't know.

would appear to suggest that the SCSI port on the back is a standard single ended controller, so I'd have thought that it should work.

But then I know nothing about SGI boxes...

According to the specs you have an External single-ended SCSI controller by default - but this would be normally only 50 pin.

I hope you don't have any HVD SCSI controller (typically used in computers from this age) - this is not compatible and will probably damage the drives.

I think we can tell you about the MSA30, but nothing about your computer ... look at the logo in the upper left corner ... :-)

Would scsi termination, be a issue with only using port A

how do you set scsi IDs on the storage works, I can not find documentation that gives me that info?

The controller is autoterminated, each connector in DB module is its own bus.

SCSI IDs are fixed to the slot.

Just a thought... Are there any other drives connected to the SCSI controller that the MSA is hooked up to ?

You might have a SCSI ID conflict...
