Question of add addition disk for MSA30 w/Raid-5

I currently have a rx2620 server connected to a MSA30 array, with 3 disk in a Raid-5 config. My question is, can I add an additional three disk drives to the MSA30 and add them into the existing Raid-5 config without having to reformat the orginal three disk? If yes, how is it done, with what software?

That MSA30 will be connected to a RAID controller. You can add disks to the RAID and then expand the existing logical units or create new ones. Check your RAID controller documentation.

You ask for the software but you did not mention your OS!

It could be hp-ux, windows, linux, vms ...


Just in case of hp-ux you need to use "saconfig".

# man saconfig

If you would like to configure the smartarray from the running OS - YES.

If you want to configure offline - No.

saconfig -E -p [-p ...]

I wonder if you have tried this command operation? Did you get any error messages?

tried with the saconfig command, but getting errors:

# saconfig /dev/ciss6 -E 0 -p 1:3 -p 1:4 -p 1:5

saconfig (/dev/ciss6): Error - FW command bad status (CHANGE_CONFIGURATION)

saconfig (/dev/ciss6): One or more fields in command have invalid data, cmd_stat
us=4

saconfig (/dev/ciss6): Current driver state is READY

Try this first:

# sautil /dev/ciss6 scan

# sautil /dev/ciss6 reset_ctlr

Run your saconfig command after each.
