Can't remove a HP Compaq 4214R from the Rack

Hello,
I have a little problem, I try to remove an old HP Compaq StorageWork 4214R from my rack cabinet.. But I can't find how to, the rack crews are not accessibles (blocked by a mysterious gray metal part that I can't remove, I can't move it from the rack and I can't find any manual...

Here is some photos of the rack system :

Any idea of how can I do ?
Thank you

You first need to remove the enclosure. Untighten the screws marked RED (see attachment). Then you can pull it out and get at all the screws which fix the rack mount kit (depending on how old it is there might be a screw on the inner sides as well).

Thank you for your reply,

These screws are already untighten, but it looks like we can't remove them, I tried to unscrew them and to pull them... But nothing...

The screws are supposed to stick with the frame so that they don't get lost.

So what must I do when these screws are unscrews ? It looks like the unit is stuck by the screws that are on each side, under the "protection" where are these screws, and impossible to remove/move this protection.

Hm, I can take a look into our lab tomorrow, but I don't remember any addition screws for the frame.

I guess a little

has happened so you would need some more force than expected. Try to push the enclosure from the rear, but don't touch the fans on the power supplies. You might cause some damage if you push the plastics.

I think I've found what is blocking the unit, on this photo:

I think it's the metal part that block on the racking rails (middle-bottom of the photo), because we have another of these units that don't have this part and they can easily be moved...

No, that is just an additional fix-point for the rack-mount kit. This is what I meant when I wrote: "(depending on how old it is there might be a screw on the inner sides as well)".

I was just in the lab, untightened the 4 screws on the front of the enclosure and was able to pull it forward.

Re: Can't remove a HP Compaq 4214R from the Rack

check the units above and under this 4214.
they may squeeze both vertical rails together so the disk cage has no room to move.

also check the back of the cage, both left and right below there is a small metal stud that holds the cage to the rail.
It seems only to prevent the cage to move too far inside or tilt upwards, but if tightend too hard the cage won't slide forward.
you can see it bottom left in picture

Re: Can't remove a HP Compaq 4214R from the Rack

Hi,

As the others have previously noted, you shouldn't need to undo any other screws, other than the accessible ones in the front of the rack.

The two covered screws are for the rails which the shelf should just sit on.

I have seen one or two sets of these rails that had an additional bracket that clamped the shelf at the back, however looking at your pictures those don't appear to be present.

Take out the PSUs with the fans, and give the unit a good push !

Cheers,

Rob

The install guide here may help:

The small bracket I was referring to is shown in Figure 10.
