trying to find info about disk drives

I trying to find out some information about some disk drives.

these are in what appears to be a jamacia hass rack. but the part number is C3636A, not C3312A. anyway there are 8 low profile drives in the hot swap trays.

now the trays have no part numbers on them (that would make it too easy), or disk size or df/se coloraization.

I've popped open a few of the trays to see what the disks might be. they are st39173 wc/lc 9G drives.

put one on a differential bus and it didn't work.

so i popped open an A5238a (9G differential drive) and noticed a difference in the adaptor board/personality card that is inside the tray.

the differential drive's has a lot more electronics where the unknown drive's is more straight through.

using the differentials drive's adaptor board the unknown drive works just fine on a differential bus.

so which type of bus does this drives adaptor board work with. the part number of the adaptor borad seems to be C3595-60136.

thinking it might be single ended, i popped the unknown drive into an autoraid that has all se 9G drives without success.

anyone have any suggestions on what kind of drives theses are or what type of bus they could be used on?

Re: trying to find info about disk drives

Have you looked at partsurfer.hp.com???

Re: trying to find info about disk drives

yes, I did look at part surfer. and without a hp part number there isn't much I can do. I even called hp about what these disks could possibly be. there weren't able to identify them either. although, they could tell me that the adaptor board was for single ended use.

it did turn out that the drives work just fine on a uw-se bus.

Re: trying to find info about disk drives

I put toghether some infos related to the mech you have, in the produc number from seagate, the letter D is for differential, so HVD, the N is for SE, may be the following table could help you in identifying the drive.

obviously SE and HVD (called Differential in thepast) are not compatible.

product numbers/Seagate disk mechanisms

A3628A ST39173N Rmkt 9 GB SE SCSI-2 disk drive
A3629A ST39173WD 9.0GB Differential Fast Wide SCSI-2 hard drive - 3.5-inch form factor, half height
A4912A ST39173N 9GB Single-Ended SCSI-2 hard drive - 3.5in form factor
A5065A ST39173WD 9GB WD DISK MECH BKLET
C6392A/C6393A ST39173N 9GB Single-Ended SCSI-2 hard disk drive - Half height
C6394A ST39173W 9GB Wide Single-Ended SCSI desktop hard drive
C6394B/C6395A ST39173W 9GB Wide Single-Ended SCSI-2 hard disk module - Half height
C6396A/C6397A ST39173WD 9GB Fast Wide Differential hard disk module - Half height
A5238-6900x ST39173WC 9GB Differential Fast Wide SCSI hard drive module - Low profile
A4910-6900x ST39173WC 9GB hot-swap Differential Fast Wide SCSI disk module

" Some disks using the same string be
either Single-Ended or Differential ", so
look the color of the disk sticker :
Differential = PURPLE
Single-Ended = YELLOW

Re: trying to find info about disk drives

and specialy for jamaica:

A5238A ST39173WC A5238-69001

that is a Differential one, HVD, you need a HVD HBA to manage it

hope this was useful
