Hello all,
Good Day,
I am using 3par whose model is 8200 and 7200, we need space for 7200 storage and 8200 have more space, so we want to remove a physical disk from 8200 storage. what is the procedure and have any data loss risk? and my 7200 storage has six 300 GB 15k disks, can I use 600 GB 15k disks with 300GB disks that I want to remove from 8200 storage?

Re: Permanently remove a disk form storage
Hi tauhidul,
When removing a physical disk from an HPE 3PAR storage system, it is important to follow proper procedures to ensure data integrity and minimize any potential risks.
Below are the steps to remove a physical disk from an HPE 3PAR 8200 storage system:
1. Before removing a disk, make sure your storage system has sufficient redundancy and that the remaining disks can handle the workload.
This typically involves having a redundant RAID configuration, such as RAID 5 or RAID 6, to protect against disk failures.
2. Check the status of the disk you want to remove to ensure it is not in a failed or degraded state.
If the disk is already in a critical condition, it is recommended to replace it before proceeding.
3. Evacuate the data from the disk you want to remove. This involves redistributing the data across the remaining disks in the system.
The 3PAR storage system should have built-in data migration tools that allow you to perform this operation without data loss.
4. Verify that the data migration process is complete and that all data has been successfully moved off the disk you wish to remove.
This step is crucial to avoid any data loss during the disk removal process.
5. Once the data evacuation is confirmed, you can take the disk offline and physically remove it from the storage system.
Follow the instructions for safely removing the disk, ensuring proper grounding and handling procedures.
As for using 600 GB 15k disks in the 7200 storage system, it is recommended to check the compatibility guidelines provided by HPE. Mixing disk capacities and types can have an impact on the overall system performance and configuration.
Remember that any modifications to your storage system, including disk removal or disk replacement,
should be performed with caution and preferably during maintenance windows to minimize any potential impact on data availability and system performance.
Do get back to us, if you need further help.
Regards,
Satish
