Adding CPU's to RP7420

I currently have and rp7420 with 6 CPU's and want to add 2 additional CPU's for a total of 8. What is necessary for the upgrade other than installing the CPU's. Is there something that has to be done to make the system see the additonal CPU's?

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

Just install 2 CPUs of the same type.

Hope this helps!

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

df command in MP can be used to identify the components installed.

PS command will give correct details only afer OS is up and running.

Once os is running (HPUX) you can verify details via ioscan or SAM utility from OS.

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

None of these commands show the new processors. HP Support says I need to run CPUCONFIG at the BCH to turn on the processor.

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

From boot menu, what does "in all" show you?

Did you connect power to the cpu modules?

Hope this helps!

I can't find that out. The server is up and I can't reboot it.

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

OK, but you can go to MP and run "PS" and "DF" and post the output (or better attach due to format).

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

OK, you have 1 module in slot 0 on cell0, 2 modules in cell1 in slots 0 and 2.

This looks good.

From "DF" command please use "D" (dump).

>> HW status for Cell 1 : FAILURE DETECTED

Need to find out what this is.

Please attach a "PS" for the cabinet ("t").

The load order for CPU modules is 0,2,1,3 - so where did you add the new modules?

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

Hi,

attachment has output specific to cellboard. DF command displays the output specific to FRU (field replacable unit) and cellboard & CPU are separate FRUs.

Can you attach output of "DF -ALL -NC" for simplicity?

Hari

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

There is no new CPU visible.

Did you lock the CPU socket?

Did you connect the power cable?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

I did not actually install it but I watched.
All he did was screw down 6 screws and attach 2 pig tales that came off of it into the cell board.

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

But the modules are still installed, right?

You need to turn the ZIF socket lock/unlock screw (between the fan blades) one half turn clockwise to lock the CPU into place.

You will see this if you inspect the empty socket.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

I just spoke with the guy who installed it and he thinks that the lock is not locked. And he doesn't see a way to lock it through the fan becasue there is a heat sync piece of metal that blocks a hole that you could possibly get to with a long allen wrench. So I need detail on how you are suppose to get the cpu in and locked. Can you lock it then put the cpu in the socket?

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

Yes, insert the module into the socket, then turn the lock screw with a special tool.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

Ok, but he is telling me that there is no way to get to the lock screw becasue a piece of thin metal on the cpu is blocking the hole.

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

You can slide this away - I did this many times before, this works!

Hope this helps!

Re: Adding CPU's to RP7420

If you install a cpu module, you slide it into the slot, lock the slot, fasten the screws.

If uninstalling, you unfasten the screws, unlock the socket, pull the module.

The metal sheet prevents a wrong order (e.g. unlock the socket and bent the pins while the screws are still in place.

A wrong order makes the installation/deinstallion almost impossible.

Tell the guy to RTFM.

;-)

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
