After interrupting boot process, then doing alternate boot system starts reading tape with firmware file on it
then gives the following error message.
IPL error: bad LIF magic
error reading IPL
This is on a D380(2) running HP-UX 10.20, The firmware is version 37.28. Was told that firmware had to be updated to 42.11 in order to run HP-UX 11.0. Firmware file cksum command sizes are correct.

Solution
When you created the tape using dd did you specify bs=2k?
When you downloaded the file (and possibly transferred from PC to D-box) did you make certain that all transfers were binary? If the cksums were done on the D-box, the transfers were ok.
Finally, known good tape and clean drive?

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
