How to configure the console port in A class server?

Hi all,

Sorry, I am new to HP-UX, maybe the following question is too simple...

My A class server has a console port. How to set an IP address to that port? Is there any password control in accessing that port? I am using HP-UX11.0.

If I have lost the password, is there any method to recover it?

Thank you!

Could you set IP address for the console port ?!

You can only set the IP address for the lan port , using " set_parms ip_address" command by root.

If you want to restric the access for the port , you can disable the rlogind/telnetd service in the /etc/inetd.conf file .

If you lost your passwd , you can enter the "single user" mode to recover the passwd

Re: How to configure the console port in A class server?

Hi,

I have heard something called the web console. Does it mean that we can assign an IP address (e.g. 10.31.1.162) to a console port (not the lan interface) and we can remotely connect to the console through http://10.31.1.162 ?

Re: How to configure the console port in A class server?

Try to use "lc" command to configure the port and provide network information such as IP, subnetmask via GSP.
( Press control+B to get into GSP with no password )

When you finished this configuation, connect the 10 BaseT RJ45 Lan Console port on the rear of A-Class server to your local network.
then, enable lan console access by typing "el"
in GSP.

Try to logon to the system with IP that you have provided.

Hope this helps,
Never say "no" first.

Re: How to configure the console port in A class server?

The N, L and A-clas servers have a serial console port and also a LAN console port. And to confuse things a bit, there is an adapter box (actually a miniature web server) called the Web Console that can be added to anything with a serial port. (NOTE: The A180 has a OPTIONAL service processor board..if CTRL-B does not do anything from the console, you don't have the GSP installed).

However, you are probably referring to the built-in LAN console. This is a separate LAN port and connects to the Guardian Service Processor or GSP. The GSP is like a second computer and has nothing to do with HP-UX. To talk to the GSP, connect an RS-232 console to the first serial port on the system using a printer (ie, null-modem) cable. Set the emulation mode of the terminal to VT100 or equivalent.

Setup 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit (aka, 8N1) and then press return a couple of times. You should see a login prompt from HP-UX. Now press CTRL-B and you'll be connected to the GSP. If no one has ever setup the GSP, then login and password are both null (just press Return a couple of times).

You can then look at all the commands. LC (IIRC) is the lan configuration. This is a separate LAN card and has nothing to do with the HP-UX LAN cards. It is connected directly to the GSP and while it has the ability to connect to the console, it should really be used mostly to talk to the GSP. You'll need a separate IP address and fill in all the other fields such as subnet and gateway.

While you are at it, you can look at the error logs (just the first one is all that is needed) and after you leave the GSP, the flashing ATTN light will finally be off. NOTE: it will go back on when you turn off power from the front panel...another tripp through the GSP will remove the ATTN light again.

Re: How to configure the console port in A class server?

I have a similar problem, maybe anyone here can help me...

We have an A180 server with the lan console port. It was configured and working perfectly, but recently we changed our network addressing. Therefore, we have to change the lan console ip so it is accessible using the new networks.

I did the usual, tried to connect to GSP using the serial console port with CTRL+B, but I don't get anything...

We also have two L9000s, we did the same procedure to change the lan console ips and everything was ok. Only the A180 isn't responding to the CTRL+B.

Someone posted above that if there is no answer to CTRL+B, GSP is not installed. But there is a lan console and it was usable. How come we can't get into GSP anymore?

Any ideas would be great.

Re: How to configure the console port in A class server?

Hi Victoria,

Keepin in A-180, there will be one inbuilt Web-console and a Lan-console for accessing the Console.

In your case if you want to access the console through webconsole,
it would have come with factory default IP of 192.0.0.192 and with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, In this case you can configure the webconsole by connecting it in peer with a PC of same Class-C IP.
Preferably use Netscape for this. Once if you assign an IP of different network and save it, you will lose the connection to it.

In other case, if you want to access the console through the Lan-console, get into the GSP(by pressing control+B) and use LC command for configuring it.

Hope this will help you.
