K260 disk jumper setting

I have a K260 with 2 internal disks i have just bought 2 new disks how do i decide how to set the SCSI id.
Is there a manual out there for HOWTO disk on a K-class :-)

which model of disk do u have? Can u reply with the model number of the disk pls.

hi jannik,

its relativly easy really, there will be some pins/jumpers on the mech somewhere which work in binary.
just add 1 or 2 jumpers here in the correct sequence like this
they work 4-2-1
so for id 6 you put a jumper on pins 4 and 2
so for id 3 you put a jumper on pins 2 and 1
so for id 1 you just put one jumper on pin 1
there is usually a small diagram on the mech denoting which the 3 pins are you need to use. aswell on which pins are for term power delay start and other features depending upon mech.

you need to avoid id 7 which is reserved for the controller id in the K class and dont use the ids already used.

Hi jannik,

The disks of k260 are not hot swap, to set the scsi id on the 2 new disks, you have to pull out the cage of disks, and look at the jumpers put on each disk ( the jumpers decide which scsi id). If the id of 1st disk is 1, the 2nd is 2, put id 3 and 4 for the 2 new disks.

What would the standard setting be 2 for the disks in a K260. And can i see it from the OS:

in other words should the setting be:

What if there is a CD-ROM as well on the system what SCSI id would it have.

Hi ,

the cage containing the disks is divided into 2 parts, one for disks and one for cd/dvd rom and tape.
The scsi id of cd rom won't affect here cause, they are on 2 different paths, on PDC : type sea.
you will have something like this:

10/0.3
10/0.4
10/12/5.3

hi jannik,

stop there before you install the disks

your 2 disks are at ID 6 and ID5 and the next two should be ID4 and ID3.

BUT...

The new disks you have are SE scsi disks with a 50pin scsi connector

The standard disks in the K class are fast wide differential drives and have a 68pin connector.

Not just the difference in pins as you can get 50-68pin adapters. These are a different standard and could blow the scsi bus on the system or damage the drive. these are nopt compatible in the K series

You need A3353A 4.5gb drives for the K class

the connecter is a 68pin connector so i think it is the correct FW disks, at least i have ordered it from a HP partner.

hi jannik,

I was going from the information you supplied above on the disks been se scsi.

The A3352A or A3352-6x00x drives are all sescsi, also can tell from the seagate part number you gave.
These are compatible with the older 800 series machines and not for the k classes.
The seagate drives that end with N are all sescsi 50pin drives and you need ones that end with W or WD.

Very important: your new disks CANNOT be standard SCSI disks--they must be high-voltage FWD disks. This is the only version of SCSI that is not compatible with any other version of SCSI controllers. Virtually all disk manufacturers supply jumper information online. If you have a Seagate disk, just go to their website and search for the ST----- number on your disk. Your existing disks can provide a base for the jumpers.

Please regard the sage advice of Mr. Rutter & Mr. Hassel -- they speak the truth!

The K260 has two internal SCSI busses. One bus is single-ended (SE) and the other is fast-wide-differential (FWD). SE and FWD SCSI devices are not electrically compatible. (In some cases, they are not pin-compatible, either.)

In the K260, the internal hard disks are connected to the FWD bus and the CDROM (and DDS tape drive, if you have an internal one) are connected to the SE bus. You really don't want to connect the "new" disks to the SE bus, as performance will be poor, and they won't work at all connected to the FWD bus. (In fact, as pointed out previously, nothing will work on the FWD bus if the SE devices are added, and the potential exists to damage the bus and almost certainly, the SE disks!)

The new drives you described are definitely SE SCSI, if the product IDs are as you stated. For more info on SCSI, specifically for Seagate drives, have a look here:

If you bought these drives from a reputable dealer and they were sold as add-ons for the K-series internal bus, that dealer should take back the SE drives and sell you FWD drives instead.

FWD SCSI disks unfortunately have 68 pin connectors the same as for most current SCSI disks even if they are not electrically compatible, so don't just look for a connector that fits. Manufacturers stopped making and selling new FWD drives several years ago, so if it is new drive you can be sure that it is not FWD. Also, and drive whose capacity is 72GB or higher is definitely not FWD SCSI. An alternative is to get a FC HBA for the K260 if you have a free HSC slot and an external DS2405 enclosure and FC disks.

I have no received 2 new disks ... They are ST34371WD (4.2GB) will they work?
