problems removing a CPU from L class server

I have an old L class server (rp5440?) running on HPUX11.i. This server has 3 440 Mhz CPU's and 2 GIG memory. this past weekend i tried to remove one of these CPU's to move to a more needy server, but when i removed it, the server would then not boot up. I was getting a CPU error, and would never even start the boot process. did i miss a required step? I need to get this out, so any help would be appreciated. thanks

The server has a configuration that remembers the CPU was there. There is a process that the hardware folks go through at the system console that makes the system know how many CPU's to expect.

I would suggest putting the CPU right back where you found it. This CPU will not work with a process of any other speed.

I've always had the hardware people handle this, but there may be a procedure for this at http://docs.hp.com

That link above is where to look. You also may have removed the wrong CPU. The system is sensitive to the order in which CPU's are installed and removed. The system board is probably marked though.

Hi Mark,

You need to install the CPU terminator in the server from which you removed the server.

You can take the CPU terminator from the server in which you want to install the server

If you open the top cover you'll find a label with the cpu load (installation) order. Remove the cpus in reverse order. That's all

Hi,

I guess you have either rp5450 or rp5470 server and you tried to remove processor 0.

In rp54xx servers. processor 0 acts as "monarch processor". It should be installed and functional.

CPU Removal order should be reverse to install order as mentioned by Torsten and refer the manual as well.

i think i found the issue. I have CPU's 0,1,and 3 installed. I tried removing 3, but according to the doc, i needed to remove 1 and leave 0 and 3. I will try again. thanks for the good info.
