Hi,
I have one rp 7420 Server with 2 hard partitions. in both of the nPars OS hp-ux 11.23 is running. In this one partition gets automatically rebooting after the shutdown -y -h 0 command. The other partition is halting properly. I have installed latest patch bundles (Dec-2007). Also checked and found he Firmwares versions are same in both cells.
Please help me to find out the reason.
Thanks in Advance...
Pramod

Re: rp7420 partition reboots after shutdown command
shutdown -y -h 0
will restart the system - always halt.
Any chance somebody swapped the original "shutdown" with something else?
# whence shutdown
This I have already seen ...
What is your shutdown_log is saying?
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: rp7420 partition reboots after shutdown command
I've never heard of this either.
On both Npars,
from the BCH>Configuration Menu check:
ResTart[ON|OFF] Set Partition Restart Policy
Is there a difference between the 2 npars?

Phil

Re: rp7420 partition reboots after shutdown command
I have manually reseted the other partion by the rs command. The logs may contain the entries of the same.

Re: rp7420 partition reboots after shutdown command
I have yet to look at the logs, but with regard to this partition, have you actually watched it shutdown all the way....or is it possibly crashing during shutdown and subsequently rebooting after the crash?

Re: rp7420 partition reboots after shutdown command

SolutionI can't seem to open the Syslog zip files for some reason.
Anyway, initially looking at the MP logs.
You have a "watchdog timer reset" which basically means the MP lost contact with the OS for a given period of time - as a result the MP resets the Partition, which would explain why you are seeing a reboot.
There are also references to "ERR_TOC_BAD_OS_TOC_ADDRESS" which causes the partition to restart.
I think you need to log a call with HP and they can collate various OS logs, and run some scripts to see what is happening.
I suspect an OS problem because more often than not machines crash when booting if the hardware has a problem, not usually when halting.

Phil

Re: rp7420 partition reboots after shutdown command
You've got a HW case to open since you are failing this test. Here is the event that should be recorded in /etc/opt/resmon/log/api.log or another.
Event 1227
Severity: MAJORWARNING
Event Summary: The OS_TOC vector is misaligned.
Event Class: System
Problem Description:
Chassis Code Keyword ERR_TOC_BAD_OS_TOC_ADDRESS.
If an OS_TOC vector is registered using PDC_REGISTER_TOC [Register TOC vector], that will be used. Otherwise, the vector stored in page zero will be used. In either case, the vector is checked for 4-byte alignment. The partition will reboot if this test fails.
Probable Cause / Recommended Action:
Cause:
The OS TOC vector is not 4-byte aligned.
Action:
Report this event to the Response Center Partition is rebooted
