Some more GSP copnfig questions

HP L3000
HPUX 11i
internal GSP card

I can never get the GSP to configure remotely.

I am in the process of deploying about 10 seperate servers around the world. I bring the servers to my office and configure them here. They are then shipped to the sites and I go make a few minor changes to the software application and reconfigure all the network settings from ours to theirs. All of the places I go will have there own IP subnet. I am afraid when I get to each site I will not be able to get to the GSP port. Our purchasing agent was told by their HP rep that we don't need consoles, so none were ordered. I have tried many times to configure the GSP port remotely, but can never make the initial connection to the GSP port. I do the following steps.

1. I connect the GSP port to a hub.
2. I connect my pc to the same hub
3. I connect the hub to our network
4. From my pc I do:
route add 192.0.0.192 132.48.2.16 (my pc)
5. I then try to telnet, ping, web browse and have never been able to make a connection or get a response from the ping.
6. I connect the one console we have here to the console connection port and configure GSP and it works fine.

What am I missing? I don't want to have drag "my" console from 1 place to another to change it's ip and settings.

Re: Some more GSP copnfig questions

Maybe "internal GSP console" is the way to go. Just a thought ..

Re: Some more GSP copnfig questions

I understand the config part. My potential problem is.

I set up a server here with ip address 132.48.2.20 for the GSP and 132.48.2.21 for the network

I ship the server to another site

The network shop at the site assigns me IP ddress 163.44.2.11 for the GSP port and 163.44.2.12 for the network. If I don't take a console, how will I get the IP changed in the GSP. I could reset the GSP, but I have never been able to configure the port without a console plugged in.

Re: Some more GSP copnfig questions

What I'm meaning to suggest is you do not need a console to access GSP. The steps below allows you to get into GSP using "cu" and once you're in GSP, the rest is just the same as accessing it via a console. So with the server on a remote location, simply telnet to it, configure as follows and the final step will bring you into GSP and you can then do the IP change. After you're done make sure you delete /dev/tty1p0 and the entries made to "Systems" and "Devices" files.

a) Create the device file ..
# cd /dev
# mknod tty1p0 c 1 0x010000

b) Edit /usr/lib/uucp/Systems and enter this ..
gspiport Any;5 gspiport,f 9600 - ''''\r\d\r\d\r ogin:-BREAK-ogin:
uucp asswrd: uucp-BREAK-ogin: uucp asswrd: uucp

c) Edit /usr/lib/uucp/Devices and enter this ..
gspiport tty1p0 - 9600 direct

d) Test ..
# cu -l /dev/tty1p0

e) To exit enter "~."

Re: Some more GSP copnfig questions

That part I understand. But if i can't telnet (because the ip that is configured is from my network not the network I am deploying on) and can't get into GSP (because the IP configured is from my network, not the one I am deploying on) and don't have a console to plug directly into the GSP/console card. How would I configure the GSP? Reading the documentation I should be able to

1. reset the card
2. go to a pc on the same subnet
3. route add 192.0.0.192
4. Then be able to connect to 192.0.0.192

I have never been able to make this work. I have tried connecting to 192.0.0.192 with telnet. I have tried from a browser. Never can connect to the GSP card to reconfigure the network settings. Once I did that I could connect to the GSP card go to the console and reconfigure the network settings there. "Then" I could telnet to the machine.

I guess I am just confused.

Re: Some more GSP copnfig questions

Did I mention I am with the server at the deployed site. The server has the network settings from my home site configured, and I need to reconfigure the network settings to the new network (completely different domain). I also have no console with me. Can it be done?

Re: Some more GSP copnfig questions

Hello John,

It very simple device. If it not work in normal mode at once - it device has corrupt.
So, you have instruction of SecureWebConsole with simple description of installation and tuning it device.

If you have problem with it device from beginning your work I can recommend you some ways of solve your problem.

If you buy the server with "Install"-options the engineer of service-center must install it device.
If device fault the engeneer of service-center must replace it unit.

I mean you may request local service-center of HP now for diagnostic and resolve it.

If you have fault device (SecureWebConsole) and have warranty on it the service-center must change it on new.

Regards,
Efim.

Re: Some more GSP copnfig questions

There are a lot of potential issues trying to configure the systems remotely. However, if you are at the remote site, make sure you carry a laptop with a serial cable and the standard assortment of 9pin/25pin adapters as well as a null-modem adapter. Then just hook up to the serial console port and configure both the GSP and HP-UX. In that way, you can resolve the issues through a simple connection (serial) and then troubleshoot issues such as routers, and subnet masks.
