Support for HP 9000 8x7, E/F/G/H/I Systems

This question comes up a lot in this forum. HP released a statement today in this regard so I thought I would copy it here for everyone.

=============================
Support for HP 9000 8x7, E/F/G/H/I Systems
=============================

When will support end on my HP 9000 8x7, E/F/G/H/I System?

In order to maximize our customer satisfaction with our products, Hewlett-Packard will provide full support for discontinued computer systems and related hardware products for a guaranteed MINIMUM PERIOD OF FIVE YEARS after the last customer shipment date. At HP's discretion, this period may be lengthened upon the onset of discontinuance, or while in discontinuance. At no time will the period be less than five years.

The last shipment of the HP 9000 8x7, F, G, H, and I Class systems was as follows:

9000 8x7: 01/01/1994
9000 F Class systems: 07/01/1994
9000 G, H, I Class systems: 05/01/1997

Therefore, the current end of support date for the HP 9000 8x7, F, G, H, and I Class systems is as follows:

9000 8x7: 05/01/2000
9000 F Class systems: 11/01/2002
9000 G, H, I Class systems: 02/01/2004

After the end of the support period, HP will provide support to customers only on a best-effort "time-and-materials" basis as far as tools, parts, and personnel will allow.

The HP 9000 8x7, F, G, H, I systems have been superseded by the HP 9000 D-Class and HP 9000 K-Class Enterprise Servers. The D-Class and K-Class offer improved performance along with reduced price/performance relative to the 8x7, F, G, H, I Systems. Hewlett-Packard highly recommends customers to upgrade to current systems in order to ensure continued support.

A footnote is that the last HPUX Operating system release for the E/F/G/H/I systems is 11.0. A table of supported system for HPUX 11.0 and 11i may be found at:

What's the 'best way' to discover which system you have (if you've come late to the scene, as I have)?

I issued uname -m and received '9000/887', then
I issued model and received '9000/887/G70/H70'

Depending on which one I choose, support either expired 5/1/2000 (8x7) or will expire 2/1/2004 (G70 or H70).

Processors are PA7100's, if that's any help.

Thanks, dan

Re: Support for HP 9000 8x7, E/F/G/H/I Systems

What HP did not include in the announcement is that there are a whole LOT of companies out there that will be happy to put these systems under a regular support contract at about 30% less than what you currently pay to HP.

There is a lot of life left in these machines and just because HP won't support them does not mean that there are not a lot of companies ready, willing and able to pick up where HP left off.

I personally know of HP3000 series 68's, HP1000's and lot's of HP9000's that go back to day one that are still doing useful work and are under a maintenance contract from a 3rd party. (Yes, I used to be a wrench turner.)

Go to www.3k.com, look under the vendor listing under maintenance and you will find a number of companies who would be delighted to help you keep your classic machine up and running.
