Are the J9151A and J4859C transceivers compatible?

Hello!

We have an HP ProCurve E5406zl with module 20x 1000BaseT PoE+ ports + 2x 10-GbE mini-GBIC ports (J9536A). We plug on the 10-GbE port an J9151A tranceiver.

We have also an HP ProCurve 3500yl-24G-PWR, 24ea 1Gb ports (J8692A) that should be connected to the E5406zl switch by single-mode optical cable. We discovered that the tranceiver J9151A is not compatible with the switch 3500yl, so we bought a tranceiver J4859C which is compatible with this switch.

Anyway, the connection between the two tranceivers (J9151A on ProCurve E5406zl and J4859C on ProCurve 3500yl) is not working.

Since I do not have many experience on this matter, does anybody now if these two tranceivers can work together? Is it necessary to have also on the ProCurve E5406zl a J4859C tranceiver?

Thank you very much for your help.

Greetings.

Re: Are the J9151A and J4859C transceivers compatible?

The J9151A isn't compatible with the J4859C. In general, optical flavours of Ethernet don't interoperate with lower speeds, or different versions of the standard. You have 10GBASE-LR and 1000BASE-LX, and you need both ends to run the same.

So another J4859C would do. However, I'm not sure you're correct in saying that the J9151A is not compatible with the switch 3500yl. It's listed at http://h17007.www1.hp.com/us/en/products/switches/HP_3500_and_3500_yl_Switch_Series/index.aspx#J9151A However, you would need add the J9312A to give you the SFP+ slots you need to install it.

Thank you very much for your clear and quick answer. And thank you for the explanation about how to use the J9151A with the switch 3500yl.
