Distributed Trunking with HP5406 Netapp and Windows Server 2012R2 and 10G NICs

Dear all,

we have the following equipment:

2 HP 5406 with 1x 8x 10G Base-T, 1x4x 10G SPF Module each

Netapp FAS 2240 with 2x10G SPF

Several Dell R710 with a 2x10G BAse-T Intel T520 Card each

Because the switches are not stackable, we have to go for distributed trunking.

I have configured the Ports on the switch as dt-lacp - and LACP on both Servers and Netapp, but I am not sure whether this is correct or whether the Netapp prefers dt-trunk, or the 2012R2 Servers work better with "Switch Independent"

Is there any best practice or recommendation concerning this?

neither netapp nor the Migrosoft guys seem to have much experience with ditributed trunking, this is why I am asking.

Thanks in advance and best regards

Markus

As long as you have created the "heartbeat" VLAN on the 5406s and spanned it between them, the switches do the magic with the MAC addresses, and the servers just have to be configured to do active LACP.

In my experience, your statement, "neither netapp nor the Migrosoft guys seem to have much experience with distributed trunking" is redundant in the use of the word "distributed". The server guys rarely seem to have any idea how LACP works and how to configure it, they use woolly words like "NIC teaming" and it always ends up being a case of trial and error, with you peering over their shoulder to ensure you understand the LACP configuration options they are selecting so you can direct the testing to ensure all combination opf options are successfully tested until you get the result you want.
