Does setting up (2) VLAN's on a switch make the port unuseable if you plug in a VOIP phone

Basically I am in the  process of setting up 2 separate VLan's - The first is for data and the other is VOIP. I am configuring a HP 2940 and just want to know if i already have a switch that is filled up with computers network connections and VOIP connections. Will creating a separate VLAN's on these already used ports create an issue

Re: Does setting up (2) VLAN's on a switch make the port unuseable if you plug in a VOIP phone

Hi James2000k,

If the current port VLAN will be staying as untagged then adding additional tagged VLANs to the ports will not cause you any interruptions of service. IF you need to remove the current VLAN or tag it then yes you will disrupt service.

With VoIP phones it is likely that you will need to add the new VLAN to the desktop ports as a tagged, so doing this will not cause you any issues.
