HP 2650 10.83 loop protection not working

Been using the loop protection feature for a few years in schools to help detect connected mini-switch loops on 2650's - worked well with earlier 10.x versions of the firmware, but recently with 10.83 I've had three diff cases of looped mini switch not being detected.  Anyone else seen a reduction or no loop detection with newest 10.83 version of software?

In the morning loop-protect worked several times as designed. But from 14:04 on it failed to disable the port.

Instead we just got every 30 seconds the syslog message

"loop-protect:  port 29 - received packet failed authenticatio n."

BTW: Reason for the loop was a dumb, unmanaged and looped switch on the procurve  port.
