procurve 2910al layer 3

Hi

I was wondering if anyone know how good the procurve 2910al does routing. I can get some for a good price and was wondering if I could use them as the core in the network. The network is only 1 Gigabit/s and have Max 550 users.

Hi MSbone,

I haven't used the 2910 switches personally, but I've used the 2824 and 3400 for routing. As long as your performance requirements aren't that high, I expect they'll work fine.

I've used 2910s, but not for routing.

You can put 2x modules of 2x 10Gb SFP+ in slots on the back of it, which comes in handy when you want to ensure the uplink bandwidth isn't oversubscribed.

They don't have redundant power, though, and really, I wouldn't like to use them as a core for 500 users. You don't have enough 10Gb ports to aggregate all your floors/datacentre switches, and I am under the impression its Layer3 capabilities are fairly limited: RIP only, no VRRP for example. They don't stack, either.

Re: procurve 2910al layer 3

Hi
As I don't really care about the functions in layer 3 mode, just how the performance is. Have used some other cheep layer 3 boxes, and they have started to drop packets. It is just a temp network, and will only maybe have use for 1 10 gbit/s link.

I will not buy it, only rent it for some days, so no need to think about the future.
