Procurve Serial Number and version Number

Hi Guys.

Looking for some information in relation to the format of the Procurve switch serial and version numbers and how to work out what they are....e.g ser:123456789  J4900-69001 It is mainly the dash part (-69001) i am interested in as i test a lot of these daily...is there a way of knowing which one goes with which switch...........any help or advice would be very much appreciated

Re: Procurve Serial Number and version Number

Hello,

Not sure what you mean by "how to work out what they are" in relation to Serial numbers, but here are some details. SNs are unique for each device and exchangeable component, and needed when you call HP support. The first two digits generally indicate the country where it was manufactured, and the remainder is generated.

The Part Number with -69001 is the Spare Part number, which support uses to order replacement parts and you can use to buy spare parts too, see http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx

The ordinary part numbers generally end with a letter A/B/C etc. and this indicates the hardware revision, which may be done for various internal reasons.

Hope that helps.
Best regards,
Justin

Re: Procurve Serial Number and version Number

Hi Justin

I totally understand the serial number side of things CN for China TW for Taiwan etc......it is the dash number after the Model number thats confusing as there are so many i was just wondering if there was some form of matrix for it as i am lead to believe that this part of the number e.g -69001 for example indicates what version or revision the actual switch is.....my biggest problem is the J4899 which doesnt seem to carry the dash part of the number only the serial......is there a way of finding this through the RS232 or web interface?

Much Appreciated

Re: Procurve Serial Number and version Number

Hi spekyteky

You're talking about three different things: serial number, product number and part number.

Serial number is serial number. You are familiar with the format.

Product number format is JxxxxA. The last digit is the HW revision, for example 2650 had three hardware revisions, J4899A, J4899B and J4899C.

Each product number is associated with a part number, for example J4899A might be J4899-61001 or -69001. As Justin says, -69xxx indicates a spare part you might get as a replacement, -61xxx indicates an original part.

That's about the gist of it. There isn't mucg more you could get from the product numbers, they're not really useful for anyone but our product engineering. So no, we don't have a public matrix you were asking for.

Re: Procurve Serial Number and version Number

HTH,

I am only interested in the dash part of the "part number" not the serial or anything else.....the information must be getting skewed or wires crossed along the line somewhere, one of the numbers in particular HP doesnt even recognise it! even though it is there number on there product...doesnt even show up in part surfer....would you have any idea how i could speak to product engineers?.........thanks for the information though much appreciated

Re: Procurve Serial Number and version Number

Hi again speky

Again, the "dash part" does not generally tell you anything useful. We use them internally.

I am really not aware of any situation when user needs to pay any attention to that part, even when using partsurfer. If you for example have a 2626 switch with a dash part and you can't find the same part in Partsurfer, the most obvious reason is that this specific part has been retired.

So could you please describe what exactly is it you are trying to do?

(HTH = Hope This Helps ;-)
