QOS

looking to verify if QOS is something always on and fully funtional once configured...

 

Ive heard rumors that QOS only comes into play when port utilization hits a certain % are 100%

Hi dannyguillory,

 

The explanation is a little more complicated, but that's basically correct.  If you turn on QoS it is on and functional, but if there's no congestion in your network, there's nothing for it to manage.

 

The trick is that through normal techniques like checking interface counters you can't know if there are very short bursts of trafffic which are causing congestion for very short periods of time.  So it's still worth doing regardless if you have voice or similar traffic that is latency sensitive.
