Splitting bandwidth of internet connection on same VLAN

Hi,

I currently have 2 sites that both have HP 5406ZL switches connected by fibre. I have an internet connection at one site that is connected to a VLAN that spreads across both of the switches, ie, a layer 2 VLAN giving access to the internet at both sites. The particular VLAN only routes to the internet and not other local VLANs.

I would like to evenly split the available bandwidth of the internet connection across both sites. It is a 100mb/40mb connection and I would like to have 50mb/20mb available at both sites. My trouble is that one of the sites is likely to hog the bandwidth however it is a lower priority site, the other site needs guaranteed 50mb/20mb.

How shall I best achieve this result?

The fibre uplink has other VLANs tagged through that I don't want to limit the speed of, so I don't think I can set the physical port to a lower speed. QOS of some sort?

If not achievable, should I be looking to the router level?

Thanks

Re: Splitting bandwidth of internet connection on same VLAN

Hi Cam7248,

Your best bet would be to see if there are any traffic shaping/provisioning tools on the internet router. You can use QoS to prioritise on the switch, but this would obviously only affect the switch ports, which I would assume are 1Gbps? So this would have little impact on the shaping/provisioning of your internet traffic. You could speak to your ISP and see if they can prioritise traffic on their network for you - they should be able to do this based on a source IP/Subnet.
