Cannot recognize MSA1000 in MSL570G2

Hi there,

I have a MSA1000 and a ML570G2, I powered on the MSA, nothing strange, got informations like this:
'70 cache disabled no configuration'
'121 no volumes detected'

then the DL370, qlogic fast! util said
'No fabric device found, ROM BIOS Not Installed'

In fact I've changed qlogic to enable, but it still cannot see MSA!
boot from smartstart 6.40, ACU cannot find MSA devices. And it also said no Firmware update required.

I've tried use CPQ SAN Switch 8EL and directly connection, neither works.

How can this happen?

Configuration is:
MSA1000:
Emu vertion 1.86

FCA2214 Host Adapter x 2:
Qlogic QLA2312 ISA Fast! Util Version 1.22

Re: Cannot recognize MSA1000 in MSL570G2

Do both the MSA and the FCA log in to the fabric switch (both LEDs on the port are on)? The MSA should also display a message on whether it logged into the fabric or not.
Have you tried the bootable CD that comes with the MSA1000?
Do plan to boot from the MSA1000? If not you can install your OS first, then configure the MSA from there (e.g. in ACU-XE for Windows or Linux)
Unless you want to boot from the MSA, you shouldn't need to go near the qlogic BIOS.

Re: Cannot recognize MSA1000 in MSL570G2

The initial messages from the MSA look OK to me. I don't recall if the QLogic adapter firmware does show the MSA's LUN 0 which is always present, but not a disk device.

There is usually a 'support software CD' delivered with the MSA. You can also download the latest from here:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/softwaredrivers/msa1000/msa1k_software.html#cd

If I recall correctly you need to use a 'trick' to have the ACU on this CD recognize the MSA:
first call the ADU (Array Diagnostic Utiltiy), then use the ACU. You will see it on the screen when you have booted the MSA support software CD.

Re: Cannot recognize MSA1000 in MSL570G2

Ok, now I use MSA CD linux ACU created some arrays, the qlogic utility when bootup cannot see these arrays. MSA has only one FC port, if use Direct access mode, Qlogic Utility can only see the card from scan disk tab; if use FC switch, nothing can be seen.

I changed to another MSA1000, which has a internal 8 ports switch, and from qlogic ctrl-q utility, I can see the disks from scan disk tab, and later in Linux works fine.

From HP website I found MSA support matrix,
the HBA firmware and SAN switch firmware does not match the requirement. See below:

CPQ Storageworks SAN Switch 2/8-EL
My system:
Kernel: 5.3.1
Fabric OS: v3.0.2k

FW Required:
3.1.1 and 3.1.1c

FCA2214 qlogic HBA card
My system:
FW: 3.01.20. ROM BIOS 1.33,

Required :
6.06.50, BIOS: 1.34, FW: Loaded from driver.

I have to upgrate the firmware?

Re: Cannot recognize MSA1000 in MSL570G2

tommy,
it is easier to try with a supported configuration, because that is what the vendor has already tested. In what state is the fibre channel switch that the configuration does not work with? Has it already been in use? It could be that there is a zoning setup which prevents to MSA and the FCA from talking to each other - login to it and do a 'cfgDisable', 'cfgClear' and 'cfgSave'.

Re: Cannot recognize MSA1000 in MSL570G2

hum, the switch have no zoing config, and as I've mentioned, without the switch the server can't see MSA array info either.

I plan to try another qlogic card which might have newer FW version for testing tomorrow.

Thx.
