Compaq 64bit 66Mhz FC ??

I have the card installed, and cpqonlin (Novell 5.1 sp4)
does see the card, but will not allow me to config it inorder create a volume. Is there a different utility to use for configuring the card or a good install .pdf someone can point me to ?

I have the latest drivers, .Ham's ect, just need a nudge in the right direction ?

thanks

Hi David, and welcome to the HP forums!

I'm a little confused about what your problem is - could you please elaborate a little?

Do you know the model number of the card (is it the FCA-2101?)

What kind of disk array are you trying to access? Is there a SAN? If so, what kind of switches? Any SAN Security in effect?

Is the disk array new or existing? Can you see any disks (LUNs) via the card?

Any other details you can think of might be useful as well.

Re: Compaq 64bit 66Mhz FC ??

Here's a link I think may be useful... sorry, but I'm not much of a Novell guy. I found this by going to hp.com, then support, then search, and searching for "novell +fibre"

Re: Compaq 64bit 66Mhz FC ??

Vincent,

Thanks for the reply, let me try to be more detailed...

I have a compaq proliant 1u dl360 server, that I have added a (Compaq StorageWorks 64-Bit/66-Mhz-Fibre Host Bus Adapter) to, I am trying to get this adapter to communicate to a McData fibre switch that connects to our IBM Shark and other SAN Boxes. The Network Storage team leader Jim H. says that port info from the McData switch says the card I have is dropping sync and showing loss of signal. He has never configured a port for a Intel based server to communicate with and is not sure if it config-ed correctly, I have call Compaq support and all they said was if the .ham and .cdm drivers loaded then the server side is up and working, it must be on the other side. I loaded the cpq online configuration util. It detects the card, but will not allow me to configure it saying that there are no configurable controllers in the servre. I realize the cpqonlin util is for array (disk) config, so is there a different util for the fibre channel card configuration ?
How can I tell if my side of the puzzle is right ? I just don't think all the answers are on the McData switch side. Is it possible to even connect this type of card to a McData switch to then define and create novell volumes on the SAN box?

I just hate re-inventing the wheel....

thanks for anything you can provide

Re: Compaq 64bit 66Mhz FC ??

David,

Fibre channel cards actually configure themselves - or at least they are supposed to. There's a defined protocol for the switch to tell the card(s) how to configure themselves - for example, to use FC/AL or FC/SW (loop or switched FC).

If you're sync is going up and down, it may be other hardware problems, including the GBIC on the card, FC cable, GBIC in the switch, and switch configuration. Try replacing what you can and see if it gets any better. If you have a replacement card, try that too.

Good luck, and do post back with how it's going.

Refer to this writeup about attaching Compaq Storageworks to Netware boxes (especially Step 9).

Re: Compaq 64bit 66Mhz FC ??

Hi,

tia

the .ham and cmd drivers seem to be loading correctly,

I have just learned of arbitrated loop and switched fibre. My Novell server is connected to a mcdata ed-5000 switch, that is connected to a IBM Shark, thus, we are switched faberic. The basic question remains ...

Does this card work with a McData ED-5000 switch ?

Are there some dia utils that will help me identify what is working correctly and what is not ?

I have found TID's and tech docs that indicate an Emulex or a Qlogic card is required to make the connection, I can not find any doc's on hp.com that say this compaq 64/66mhz card will work with a switch or directly to a shark!

any thing that can get me answers on these questions would be great

thanks

Re: Compaq 64bit 66Mhz FC ??

CPQONLIN is only for compaq/HP smart array controllers. The array controller in the RA4100 is a smart2P controller modified to fibre. If you are trying to configure an HSG80 controller it won't work.

Re: Compaq 64bit 66Mhz FC ??

Another thing, I don't see it mentioned to what controller you are connecting to: HSG80, RA4100/4000, etc.

The netware driver for the HBA you have is CPQFC.HAM. HAM being the Host Adapter driver (HAM). The other driver, like the CPQSHD.CDM, would be for the array controller you are connecting to: HSG80 for example.

I would imagine that depending the controller you are trying to connect to if it's not the HSG80, would be a different CDM driver.
