Re: Connecting an HP 8/12c blade switch to an older HP 2gb switch
can you post firmware version of your both switches and the model of an old one?

Re: Connecting an HP 8/12c blade switch to an older HP 2gb switch
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=1143864&prodNameId=1143865&swEnvOID=54&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=co-69392-2
it may be possible, but first the switch needs its firmware updated to v3.2.1c which you can download from
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=315086&prodNameId=315088&swEnvOID=54&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=co-51871-1
Next question: Where did you get the new switch? While there are specific firmware versions both older and newer, "v6.2.0d" is not on HP's list of supported firmwares.

Re: Connecting an HP 8/12c blade switch to an older HP 2gb switch
Thank you for the excellent information. I will be checking it out later today.
The newer switch came fresh from HP as part of our recent c3000 blade enclosure order.

SolutionThe good news is, there's newer firmware for the embedded switch that will work in your environment: v6.2.0g.
The bad news, 6.2.0g appears to be the LAST version that 'talks' with the 3800s. V6.3.0 and forward do NOT list the 3800 switches as being compatible. :(
The most current firmware for your new switch, aka Brocade 5480, looks to be v6.3.1a
which is only supported with the HP StorageWorks MSA SAN Switch 2/8 running v3.2.1c. (No idea why just one and not the other related switches.)
As far as I can find, the latest supported version for the embedded switch THAT STILL SUPPORTS TALKING TO THE FC 16, aka the SAN Switch 2's, is V6.2.0g:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=3709945&prodSeriesId=3759005&swItem=co-71123-1&prodNameId=3759006&swEnvOID=54&swLang=13&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=0
It's time to look at replacing the FC 16-b. As far as I can see, Brocade dropped support for the 3800s back around December '09. The v6.3.0 firmware and later are not supported with the 3800s.
