Core switches are at the center of your network where as Edge switches are on the edge.
Typically you connect your servers (and optionally storage) to the edge and the cores are used to interconnect the edge switches.
The switches used could be either Directors or Departmental switches, depending upon the size of the network.
The Directors are typically modular switches with a high-density port count.
The Departmental switches are smaller and have a fixed number of ports.
