EVA Vdisk extension and W2K

I have a 250GB vdisk that is presented on a w2K server (w/ MPIO). I have a partition and fs on this vdisk. I extended the vdisk on the EVA but the physical size doesn't grow. We are using Basic disk. Any ideas of why this is happening. It's a production server so a shutdown wouldn't be a great idea right now...

Re: EVA Vdisk extension and W2K

The server does not automatically become aware of the size change. You need to go into the "disk manager" (or whatever this was called in W2000, I don't remember at the moment, sorry) and re-scan.

Now you should see the enlarged disk, except that there is unpartitioned space at the end.

The next task is to expand the partition/filesystem. Grab the DISKPART utility from Microsoft's site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/new/diskpart-o.asp

- run DISKPART.EXE
- type LIST VOLUME
- choose the volume to expand:
-- SELECT VOLUME n
- type EXTEND
-- and it will use all free space

In case you intend to use DISKPART on Windows 2003, please note that it already includes its own version of DISKPART.

Re: EVA Vdisk extension and W2K

Did you run "restan disks" in disk manager?

Nathan:

Also, make sure your tunning at least Service Pack 4 otherwise you may have a problem with Elplorer seeing the "full size" even though Disk administrator may look to be just fine.

Re: EVA Vdisk extension and W2K

Sorry...I should've included that we rescanned the disk many times and nothing. Any ideas? Does anyone know if MPIO would need any TLC for this?

Re: EVA Vdisk extension and W2K

Are you connected through terminal services and have tried a new login.
Did you close and re-open the computer management?

Nathan:

Did you perform the diskpart steps yet? You need to do this for anything to happen.

Re: EVA Vdisk extension and W2K

Oh, you never said you seen extra space. Uwe mentioned it in his assessment.

Can you attach a screenshot of your Disk Administrator window?

Re: EVA Vdisk extension and W2K

OK...so yes we are using terminal svcs, ie Remote Desktop. My admin wasn't logged in at the time that I added the space.

As far as diskpart goes, I don't see any free space on my physical disk. If I don't see that I don't think I can extend the partition.

I added a second physical drive (i.e. new lun) and everything worked fine. When I grow that new lun it doesn't show up either.

Reading back thru...I need to make sure he closed disk mgmt. and reopened again. I have had some hiccups as far as that goes too. Any ideas?

Re: EVA Vdisk extension and W2K

Nathan you will not see the additional space until you use diskpart to extend.

download diskpart from MS. goto dos, run diskpart.
type in list disk
it will then give you an output of your disk drives.
type in select disk # (based on the output)
type in list volume
type in select volume # (based onthe output from list command, here you should see the free space.
type in extend
this will run for a few seconds.

Once that is done you should be done and windows will see your new found disk space.

Re: EVA Vdisk extension and W2K

I think we are talking to different things here. The physical disk v. the logical disk. The physical disk shows no free space therefore there is nothing for the logical disk to extend onto.

Re: EVA Vdisk extension and W2K

Nathan:

Is the box running SP4? Also, has the box been rebooted at all?

Can you look at the box from the actual console?

Sometimes terminal services is not the best way to do things. The box might need to be rebooted and terminal services sometimes does not display all console messages.

Re: EVA Vdisk extension and W2K

RESOLUTION: It turned out to be a terminal services problem. I mentioned terminal services to my admin, and he said yea that's likely the cause. Logged back in again and the disk magically appeared. Thanks for the help!!
