How to create new file system utilizing space on SAN?

Hi
I have about 300GB free space available on EVA5000 SAN. SAN is connected to my server A.

I want to create a new 50 GB partition on server A.

Can someone help me provide step by step commands please? Thanks

Hi there.

What operating system?

Have you ever used Command View EVA before, do you at least know where is installed?

Server A is running HP-UX 11v1. I know a little bit about EVA5K and have access to it and can see all the disk groups, disks and free space on it. Thanks

Re: How to create new file system utilizing space on SAN?

It looks straight that you create a new Vdisk (select RAID1/5 and source DiskGroup)of 50GB and under the HOSTS you will find your current host configured, assign this new Vdisk to it. (Better guidance can be obtained by CommandView EVA UserGuide from HP website). Rest work is on HPUX (pvcreate, vgcreate, lvcreate, mount...)

I am only afraid that you shouldn't chew the free space in EVA which is mandatory for EVA to serve you efficiently. If you create the RAID1 you will reduce the 100GB from free pool and if your EVA is already utilized at or near 95%, you will force to go in problems.

Best suggestion is to get the guidance from someone who knows EVA well.

This will cost you points ;)

Start Command View EVA, select your storage, select the vdisk folder, and create a new folder or a virtual disk on an existing folder (just for keep it nice and ordered).

Clic on "Create Vdisk" button. Fill the name, size and RAID Level. Do not use RAID 0. Leave all other values as default.

After finish the creation, you must present to your server, select the newly created virtual disk, and clic the "presentation" tab. Clic on the "present" button and select the host from the list (hoping is in the list).

After that, at the host you should rescan disk and create device files.

ioscan -Cdisk
insf -eCdisk

The device should be visible now.

Thanks guys. Isntructions were very helpful.
Only other thing I did was added a new host and presented virtual disk to the new host I added.
