moving from a ds20 to ds25 with HSG80 controllers

Hi I am planning to change a DS20 for a DS25 alphaserver system.
The matter is that I have connections and Luns presented to this host ds20.

I will get new HBA cards for the new DS25 , but if I install the DS@% with this new HBAs adapter the controllers will recognize new connections.

Will be better idea plug out and the old HBAs adapter from the DS20 and install into the new DS25 so I will only had to set the but path for the DS25?

Thank you , I will appreciate comments.

If you like to save some work/time, yes, that makes sense. The HSG is 1 GigaBit anyway. Just make sure that you retain the cabeling - else you will create new connections as well ;-)

The custumer is going to add a second HBA, at this moment only have one.

The OS is VMS
-My plannig:

1--take note about the boot device.

P00>>show bootdef_dev

2--Take note about all the setting that are for the old system from the P00>> prompt
P00>>show

3--install the new alpha in the san.
grant access for all the luns to the new connection that will appear for the new HBAs .

4--boot the system with the new alpha system

--if everything is ok.

delete the not used connections.

note: This san only have this OS with VMS,
they are not planning to add any other system into this san.

comments are welcome,

thank you.

Re: moving from a ds20 to ds25 with HSG80 controllers

That is the 'playing safe' version which doesn't risk a hardware damage by opening the old system. (That's what I prefer, if possible).

I would also grab the output of:
>>> wwidmgr -show wwid -full

That way you can make sure the new server sees each unit over each possible path, too.

Remember that you cannot run the program after a shutdown of the operating system - you must first do a:
>>> init

Before you do that I suggest you check the variable:
>>> show auto_action

and set it to
>>> set auto_action halt

to prevent an automatic boot of the operating system. After you have run WWIDMGR you, again, need to do a:
>>> init

to clear the memory area. Don't forget to
>>> set auto_action OLD_VALUE
.
